Grizzleys in Sheep Country

In principal I agree with what BCWill has to say (especially the awareness part).
What I would like to add to his comments is that our individual actions and awareness create our bear statistics and to mention that Treadwell never killed game.

From my experience if you are going to have a serious problem with a bear it will most likely occur when an animal is down. There is little doubt the odds of a bear turning aggressive go up exponentially if it observes the hunter gutting an animal is completely unaware of its presence. Plain and simple bears are opportunists.

Body language and awareness are more important than anything else in grizzly country....Including caliber selection.
I believe this is why the guides have so few bear problems.
 
I've hunted, hiked and fished among black, grizzly and polar.

When I was younger and dumber I once fed a wild grizzly ''mountain dew'' and nachos.

I have hiked on the same slopes with Grizzlies quite a fews times with no gun or spray or anything, and countless times in the bush.

One place that I never ever felt comfortable was in willow stands and the middle of open meadows.

I personally know three people who have been attacked by Grizzly bears and performed the bloodwork and crossmatch on a fourth.

Of these, 3 were a matter of surprising the bear, and the other was full out charge.

I usually hunt ELk Moose and Bear in those areas with my guide gun or 30/30

A sheep rifle is only a sheep rifle when you're shooting sheep. Most big game rifles can become a bear rifle quite adequately if needed.
 
Nothing to add to this thread except that Treadwell had photographed this bear and that it was old and he even said it could not compeat with the other bears for food!

That would have made me want a rifle (of any kind to dispatch this bear)because that would make me his #1 meal.

Sometimes you can know too much,I just want penetration (in a round) any cal will do(in the bear and out the back of the bear)in at least .30 cal (rymes with FAL) The ice storm is here now and I'm snockerd !

I'd just take my sheep hunting rifle with good bullets (TTSX) and go hunting...

How you handle the rifle and your bullet construction have much more to do with if you will survive a grizzly charge than the size of the bore.
