Now see! This is the kind of situation I don't want fear to get people in. Hiking and birdwatching is already expensive with all the Gore-Tex and Swarovski binos etc... etc... and then just on the off chance you might see a bear, you sell your car and buy a rifle like that... craziness!

It's a "military grade" assault rifle esp with the 10 shot mag. I'm in good hands carrying that as long as JT does not ban it as well.

Guaranteed he is either going after more guns or will start a war when he gets out of his Covid-cave... but that won't happen until the truckers go home.

LOL that old rifle with hose clamps reminds me of an old Lee Enfiled in 303 British that I had the barrel shortened on and cut to a pistol grip when I first started hunting with a bow in bear country.

This is my go to bear defense rifle now = 21" barreled Rem 700 in 375RUM I load 350gr bullets at 2450fps it was in a black/gray laminate stock for years but added a Cadex chassis and 5 round detachable mags last year.

I put this rifle together while I was working as a self employed freeminer in BC & Alberta for anything that moves defense and hunting.

I pop off the scope and mount a rear XS Sights backup ghost ring when I use it for defense.

bottom one in the picture top one is my 26" barreled 300RUM

12 gauge, 00 buck, followed by slug or 00 buck, followed by slug or 00 buck.

With the first shot with 00 buck, a few pellets would hit the bear and give it a shock to at least pause or slow down. This would give you the time for aiming more accurately with a slug or 00 buck.

This is my 14" Dlask Arms barreled Rem 870 Express 12 gauge when I carried it for bear defense I loaded it with Brenneke slugs and practiced with Score slugs what I never did was load 00 buck.

Nice looking rifles! & hmmm...Anything that moves? So, like Sound shots? lol Question: What have you killed for Defense?

This little guy is one of the bears I have shot in defense weighed over 1000lbs and its a spring mountain grizzly.

I've got a couple cans of expired Yukon Magnum spray on hand. I really should go and fire one off to see exactly how it does 'pattern.' If they're anything like expired marine flares, I could be in for a surprise.

^ I shot off an expired smaller one, it had low 'compression"? HArdly came out. Maybe the bigger ones will hold compression better. I actually have 2 Bear ones that are 2 years expired now...gahh... I noticed last time searching, you 'can' find them around, but Amazon had none, just small ones, or were like double+ priced retail.

Just for kicks, I fired an expired can into my garage corner and walked into the fringe of the cloud. I didn't go for the full effect but enough to make my eyes water, so I wouldn't be totally surprised if I ever had to use it.

Grizz

Great post, thank you for the info!
I will be using it primarily for taking into the bush when I'm not hunting, which most of the time is a long hike in the back country. I'd like somthing fairly small and light and open sights. I've always liked lever action rifles so I'm thinking either a Henry 4570 sidegate, or the Pedersolie Boarbuster or the Guidemaster. Cabelas has them in stock so I'll prob go take a look tomorrow.

No worries - Thanks for doing your part keeping the thread on track. Hot topic as you can see...

If you're committed to a lever option and you don't reload, I'd specifically recommend a Marlin 1895G (45/70 with the short magazine tube). Personally, I prefer that action to what I see on the Pedersoli. Use some of the savings to send it off to a smith that you trust with leverguns (e.g. Rusty Wood Trading) to have it worked over for reliability (springs, action tune, whatever the man suggests) and add a ghost ring sight of your choosing (maybe a fiber optic front, too). Use the rest of the savings for practice ammo!

You can get shorter and lighter options in 45/70 than the above but you might find the handling to be unfamiliar (not to mention the muzzle blast). Hotter chamberings are available, too, but I'd stick with 45/70 for ammunition availability.
