Hey Guys. After a weekend in the Woods you really start wondering about the creatures moving around out of sight. Sitting in a cut at 6am really gives you a feeling for how dense the woods are here in B.C. Since we didn't see much to shoot at this weekend  we had lots of time to talk about bears and other things roaming the woods. My buddy john has been hunting for over 30 years and was actually Charged by a Griz back in about '96. Stuff like that makes for good stories :D
I am in the process of buying a Winchester Defender off of a Fellow CGN'r for use as a Bear Defense gun. I'm planning on running 3" Mag Slugs through it.
My question is, Have any of you guys ever been charged by a Grizzly? What was the outcome? Did you have to Drop it? Can you give any tips as to how to prepare your self for an attack? It's one thing having a gun to defend your self with but if it jumps up 25' away from you, you have a split second to have your gun up and the bear shot. How do you prepare for something like that?
Stories are Great, so if you have a Grizz story TELL IT :D

We also ended up talking about Big Foot. Apparently The son of a guy we hunt with has seen one  I started looking into it on the net and there is lots of info. There have been ALOT of reported sightings here in B.C. over the last Century. Any of you guys believe in Big Foot AKA Sasquach? My rational is the Wolverine. incredible creature that is terribly rare. not much is known about them and not many people are lucky enough to see one in their lifetime. Also, as I said, the woods are so thick and dark I see no reason why something like that couldn't hide it's self if it wanted to. I am a believer and find it pretty cool to think about. Anyone on here have a story? This is a Bull#### Free zone :D

Cheers,
Wally

For some reason this thread reminds me of that great line from Apocalypse Now...."never get off the boat... never get off the boat"...

:D :D :D I Love talkin about this stuff. Anything that makes the hair on your neck stand up is awesome.

In the fall the DNR bring in a few guys every year to get polar bear experience. Now this happened some years ago, but I guess the CO thought that there where too many bears at this location where lots of tourists were congragating to watch them, and there was to be a general round up. So there I was - the CO's probably had a dozen bears darted. Now I don't know what this young guy was thinking, but he gets out of his truck and walks unuarmed towards a bear that was drugged. Well he must of thought the bear off to his left was drugged as well, but it was just laying there sleeping. So it gets up and starts walking towards him. I figure well I wonder if they'll charge me for killing this bear, rather than letting it have it's way with this kid of their's. So window open and .416 on the bear, I slowly drive ahead to intercept it's coarse, and it turned (damnit). I don't know if that kid ever knew he was in trouble, but my heart was beating.

Another time I was walking my dogs along the coast road just before dawn. I could hear cracker shells but couldn't see the flashes. Then I saw head lights coming along the railway tracks, about 200 feet from the road, now I had to get over onto the tracks to make my way back home. I couldn't see because of the lights in my eyes, but I figured the bear was on the low ground between the road and the tracks - so if I was going to cross I'd best get at it. Well sure as #### that bear was further ahead of them then I figured, so there I was half way between the road and the tracks with the bear. Shadow - my shepard - hates flashes and loud noises, so he goes around my leg with the leash about 3 times so I'm not going anywhere. That old bear was moving right along, and why it didn't run right over me I don't know, but he crossed about 10 feet in front of me - I'm sure I could of touched him with the barrel of my 590 if I'd of stretched. Anyhow - the bear climbs up onto the road and stops broad side. At this time I took matters into my own hand and sent a barrage of 12 gauge slugs of towards him just to let him know coming back my way wasn't a good plan. I walk up to the CO's truck and guess what them guys say..."Whoa - did you ever scare us!" I didn't think at the time I was too rattled, but it wasn't until I got home and unslung my mossey, that I discovered I had carried it another 2 miles with a chambered round and no safety on.

I think the most dangerous game up here are the CO's. :p :D

I think that every hunter has got spooked at one time or another. About 15 years ago, I was coming back from my stand (and yes I am not scared of the dark  ) and I felt the hairs stand up on my neck for no reason. I could swear I was being watched and stalked. It was a 20 minute hike to the truck. I sure was happy to see that '74 Ford F100!!! Put it this way, the truck was started before I loaded my gear in and the gun was the last thing to be unloaded and put away  I have never felt that way since. It was really weird and undescribable. I don't know it it was a wolf, bear, or a ####en Alien and I didn't want to hang around and find out!!!!  If it was a Friendly Alien, I would have felt sorry for the bastard 'cause I would have annihalated him!!!!

Alien: "I come in peace..... "
Moe: "Quick break his legs before he gets away!!!"
- Simpsons!!!!

For some reason this thread reminds me of that great line from Apocalypse Now...."never get off the boat... never get off the boat"...

That was the best, wasn't it!

Any of you watched the movie (based on a true story) called "Fire in The Sky"???? Watch that the night before you go deer hunting!

never been "charged" by a grizz but have tangled up a couple times now with black bears and had a couple good run ins with grizz were I proved smoking and being overweight can still outrun ben johnson in the 200 meter dash

on a side note I did sit with some of the guys for coffee thismorning, out of ten or so guys we cover probably 2000 square miles working for various companies in the bush, in the past 2 weeks we came up with a figure of 76 grizzly sightings in the lakes district area of BC, time to open the dam season up on there fluffy arses again and screw the LEH and the bunnyhuggers and granola bar crunchers , I did also speek with a local CO who agreed we have a overabundant supply of bears all of a sudden.

I am to fat to run and to fat to climb trees, guess theres gonna be some dead bears

Wow..I've got lots of grizzly stories, but no charges, i am happy to report! :D

Some real close encounters with grizzlies and black bears, but no Samsquantch.

There are a few guys on here that have been charged by grizzlies while hunting, IIRC>

:D Thanks For the Replies Guys! keep um comin!

Boomer, There are alot of Stupid People out there :D Unfortunatly people tangle with Survival of the Fittest and polution of the Gene pool Continues  I'm glad, for his sake, that you were there and ready. He woulda owed you one if that thing had decided it was Hungry... or threatened  Good Stories. I hope I get to see a Grizz. I don't want to be charged but I would like the Rush of seeing one out in the bush. I Would also like to be prepared in case one decides I look tasty.

sPuTnik, I know that Feeling!! Scary Eh? it's hard to draw the line between Paranoia and picking up on those sences that weren't so uncommon once upon a Time. If you know what you're doing out in the woods.... there was probably something there  Dog's feel stuff like that, why not humans? Good Story, :D My Buddy and I talk about fire in the sky all the time! That is Kooky ####!! That'll raise the hair on your neck. Apparently there was an obduction just outside Kelowna a few years back.

bone-collector, Apparently them's Black bears are nothing to Sneeze at! Another friend of mine had to blast one that took possession of a deer they had just shot. It wasn't very happy to see people coming up to it's deer! They had JUST shot it and that bear was on that deer like stink on a Monkey. It MUST have been right there in the area in order to be on it that fast. The funny thing is that they probably Never would have seen it had they now downed a deer. Sounds like you're gonna have to take me on a Tour of the woods in the Lakes District! :D We Actually put in for limited for the Grizzlies but Didn't get a Tag

Keep the stories comin :D

I have also had some very close encounters with black and grizzly bears. I wish I could say the same as Gatehouse about not being charged by a grizzly. I was charged last year while hunting by a large pissed off sow with three cubs.

All I can say for advice is bring a clean pair of undies cause your gonna need em.

As far as what gun to carry, search the one million threads on Gunnutz. Maybe you will find one of them to be usefull

 :D

no problem Wally , I work, live and play in the bush up here, and yes we put in for he LEH every season , seems no one here ever gets a draw  , just open her up for 1 year and they will be thinned down again

Look at this weeks paper from Houston and you will see why you should carry a BIG stick no matter where you go in the bush around the Lakes District. This cranky bear taken last weekend was on the same farm that the one in the Smithers Airprt was taken from 4yrs ago. Only this boar was 37pounds lighter and the skull is actually bigger than the first one. Apparantly the Bell's must have really good beef to be able to raise 1000 pound bears every four years!

LOL yep, My buddy is one of the Best Bushmen and toughest SOB's I know and he said he pissed him self when that Boar Charged him. The Bear and the Cache were between him and his Truck! You can't run in those Cuts!! If he hadn't had his .300Win Mag he would have been a memory.
Ok So tell the Story!! You can't say "I was charged by a pissed off sow and 3 cubs" and not tell the story! :D Did you Plow her?

I know what Gun I'm getting. Winchester Defender W/ a pistol Grip and I'm ordering a Top-Folding Stock out of the US for it. What I'm wanting to know is how to prepare for an Attack? Should you do some Drills with your firearm? Safety off but nothing in the Pipe while you're out in the woods? What is Recomended for Bear Survival? Maybe I should take a bear Defence course or something. Do they offer them in the Okanagan?

Bone-Collector, that's the way it goes with LEH. If Paul Martin was a hunter I bet he would have one every year. I bet it's rigged by his Minions. You're a Burns Lake Boy eh? Do You know Ed Neave?

Cheers

Houston is near Smithers, BC.

two weeks ago or so, while out chasing grouse along an old grassy road, the dog was about 10yds ahead, and darted in to the woods on the left. A few seconds later a great crashing and smashing of branches .... and I'm standing there with a single shot .410 thinking... "this might not be good...."

Well this huge cow moose comes tearing out of the bush right in front of me, going left to right into the woods on the other side! Moose are almost black this time of year, and at first glimpse I thought it was a bloody big bear.... (That's how the 20g slug/bear defence thread was born  ) It happened so fast, I didn't have time to be startled... It all just happened and then ended.

It's amazing how an animal that size can take about 8 steps into the woods and just simply vanish! No more sound, and out of sight.

Then of course, you all know about the sasquatch sighting at Haggisfest this summer....

Got charged by a c.o. last year for having a loaded gun on my quad. Tried to defend myself with a twenty but he wouldn't go for it.

How do I post a picture???
While I learn how do put up a picture just do a google search on "The Phantom of Hunry Hill" and you will get an article that was posted a few years ago in Outdoor life magazine, the second bear I mentioned was taken on the same ranch last weekend.
