don't need anything that spacial i like the Nosler Partition or the Swift A-frame. If you hit em right a 180 gr winchester old school silver tip will work I know from experience.

Please give us some of your experiances that you know from, I would love to hear them as well

Has anyone suggested the High Energy loads from Federal? I've chronographed their 180 N/P and compared them to other 180 grain factory loads and 180 max loads from the lyman manual. The High Energy loads were 276 FPS faster on average and they were by far the most consistant velocities. (In my -06, I can switch back and forth between those and my home load, 165 grain hornady S/P, accuracy, deer load and they are both on at 200 yrd without adjusting the scope.) I would stay away from Hornady's Light Magnum load with the boattail bullets as they don't hold together on impact.

Beware the man with one rifle because he likely knows how to use it! Sounds to me like you've got it made with one rifle :) Standard deer loads and heavy hitters all in one without handloading. I should try that instead of owning a pile of rifles in different calibers that I handload for, but then would I still be a "gunnut"? ;) :D

what bullet would you use for mountain grizzly (not coastal brown bears) in the 30-06 Springfield?
Okay I can tell you this....
A 165(168?) Blue Moly Barnes X bullet traveled full length from the brisket and out the rear hip of a 5' Black Bear launched from a 300 mag.........
I'd suspect a TSX to Perform about the same in an '06...just get a hair closer before firing :p ;)

Not a Grizz but I doubt a 6-7' grizz would have fair'd any better :)

I'd use Your TSX's and Go Kill a Big Fat Yogi:cool:

.

You dare to suggest factory ammo to Ballistic Supergenius TodBartell?:runaway:

I think some of you guys failed to notice that young DJ Riley was talking about "spacial" loads. These clearly are NOT loads that us ordinary gun nutz have tried, but extremely complex loads that old Death Dirty himself has worked up for outer space. Hell, the velocities alone are probably going to make us come in our pants.

Doug

Tod, what's wrong with your standard load with a 168 TSX? Do you honestly think that a 180 TSX or a 240 Woodleigh will penetrate further than that bullet at .30-06 speeds? I strongly doubt it. On the other hand, the 168 is a proven performer in your rifle and the slightly extra velocity of the 168 will ensure expansion, even after 200 yards.

I am surprised non have mentioned

and their monolithic bullets

actually Ive never shot 168 gr Triple Shocks in my current 30-06, the only two loads Ive ever shot have been 110 gr Vmax & 165 gr Accubonds

I may just end up shooting the 168 TSX, but I also might pick up a box of 200 gr TSX, they're not much $ :)

My 165 grain deer loads are loaded at home but there is no way I can come close to the velocity of those high energy loads from federal, or the light magnum loads from hornady. Here's some numbers; (These are all 3 shot averages) Remington factory 180 gr C/L PSP = 2562 fps
180 gr N/P with 60 gr H4831 = 2556fps
Federal High Energy 180 gr N/P = 2832
That's 273 fps faster than the average of the other to loads. They work in my rifle, a little under an inch. Not the 1/2" of my deer load but still plenty good enough.

Interesting thread, fer sure!

As one who hunts regularly in grizzly country for other big game with a .30-06, my typical load out would be either with Winchester's FailSafe in 165 or 180 grains or Nosler's Partition in 180 grains.

Other bullets I'd consider:

Nosler: - Partition in either 200 or 220 grain
Swift: - A-Frame in 180 or 200 grain
Barnes: - TSX in 168 or 180 grain
TB: - Bearclaw in 165, 180 or 200 grain

If I were to go grizzly hunting with the .30-06 - I'd still go with the FailSafe, but in 180 grain or Nosler's 200 or 220 grain Partition (whichever shot better). Like Doug, I'd use more gun, but gun that I could handle comfortably and accurately

Tod, I'd use this as a great excuse to get another rifle, and what rifle loonie would turn down that golden opportunity?:dancingbanana: :dancingbanana: :dancingbanana:
