Grizzly Rifle

Haven't seen anyone chime in about shot placement with a smaller calibre rifle.
I'm amazed how brave some people are when the wounded game isn't going to kill them..
I use a .375 H+H with 260 or 300 gr. Nosler partitions
Bigger is better

Exactly!! This would be my choice GUB :)

"...a .300 Weatherby Magnum...quickly discovered it lacked caliber and bullet weight for the big bears,..."

"...he began using a .338 Winchester Magnum. His experience with this round was with mixed results, and he returned to the .375...."

"...failures have been observed with various .30-caliber magnums, .338s and even .375s...."

"...standard .45-70 handload consists of a heavy dose of Hodgdon H-322 behind the 405-grain Kodiak bonded softpoint at 1,900 to 2,000 fps. This combination has proven to be a real hammer on cranky bears...."

Cool article.

I read that article when it first came out could be why H322 is my all time favourite 45-70 powder.

On my last grizzly hunt I packed a 21" barreled T/C Contender carbine single shot in 375JDJ loaded with 260gr Accubonds @ 2300fps.

I think my short 20” 9.3x62 would be my choice! Or my 458 win mag, but it is a bit heavier and not as fast as the 9.3 in terms of handling in my hands!

I'm confident with me RAR in .450 BM to cover me arse in big bear territory. I load 360 gr Cast Performance WLNGC bombs over 5744
to around 1600 fps which be a wee snappy out of the Ruger, but not uncomfortable to shoot. At 6.2 lbs, my rig is quite nice to carry
and fast to get on target.

Why bring up an 8 year old thread? Nothing new to add...
After a year or two lock them and you have to have a mods approval to open it.
Starting a new one will get better results.
Also lots of old dead stickys that could be released from purgatory to clean up the thred page.

Old thread but I’ll throw in my 2cents. .416 REM is about ideal.🙂 in my book anyway. My one and only one fell to a 350x at about 2650. Worked very well. Anything from 06 up will work but if you have big guns, this is where to use them. That short .378 is cool, if it’s close range they can be lightly toasted. 👍

Nothing wrong with an old thread. "2017", pre-covid, a good year. Here's two rifles I have that'll work for Griz.

- First is my 1953, pre-64 M70, 375 H&H
- Second is my 1959, pre-64 M70, 338 WM
