Grizzly Rifle

This is all good if we are talking hunting grizz but not so much in defence against a charging grizz…
I think 12 gauge and breneke slugs is the way to go!

I the last African PH I read about used a 9.3. 286 Nosler Partition, Trophy Bonded Bear Claw etc. Peep sights. 200 yds max(Sniping isn’t hunting). And shot thousands of everything for game control when he wasn’t guiding. If customers couldn’t demonstrate a quick second shot they were in for an expensive camping trip.

Many of the examples posted here are true dangerous game rifles in heavy hitting cartridges. Any one of them will vastly outperform a 12 gauge regardless of the type of slugs you put in it.

That is for sure! The only thing that is for the 12g if it is a defence type gun with a short barrel is handiness compare to a full length hunting rifle and also I most people’s hand faster rate of fire of a pump action vs the popular bolt action rifle. Don’t get me wrong, I carry a rifle 99% of the time while in the bush, but I also carry bear spray that is way faster than any rifles or shotgun slung over your shoulder and less chance to shoot something/someone you didn’t intended to…
People have that impression that if a bear is coming after you it will come from the front at a walking pace… well it might but that ain’t a threat! The threat is when that bear is coming at you from behind or the side at 50km/hr and I can tell you that not many if any will have the time to do anything at all!! You will be dead before you know it!! 😉

While I get the handiness of a 12 ga., when you come back to the kill site and the gut pile is burried even the .338 or .375 in your hands feels inadequate. You don’t need a cannon but more is better.🙂 Elk hunting in the north I typically carried no more than 22” of barrel with sights and a QD scope. Scope comes off when the packing starts.

So went down to the gun shop today and didn't buy what I thought I was going to but real close. Turns out they had a 2008 m77 Alaskan black in 375 ruger on consignment so I picked it up for 800 bucks and the guy who consigned it also threw in a new box of brass, couldn't be happier. Thanks again to everyone.

Sorry the photos pretty bad not my strong suit.
What was chosen and purchased was shared long ago.

I bumped into an old coworker yesterday.
He's from a coastal first nation and a big hunter. I asked and was surprised to hear that his favorite rifle for bear/moose is the ol 30-06. He said it "just seems to knock em stiff everytime". Ranges aren't long as that country is very dense but interesting all the same. 180gr
