Grouse hunting guns

I use a 25" barrelled Remington 11 48 in 16 bore. It came from Ilion as a 28" FULL but now it is 25" with a wide open CYL bore. 1OZ. game loads of any brand with #6 shot work perfectly. The gun is very easy to carry, super reliable with it's long recoil action and portable in the thickets. A forum member here traded me some 1 oz. Fiocchi (marked target) 7.5 @1300 fps. They hit hard too. Never seen a 16 bore load marked as target until these came along. I shoot about 3/4 of my grouse flying because my lab makes them fly. Going to try the 11 48 with some #6 steel this fall for ducks over decoys.

Yes air. They actually made AA skeet loads years ago marked as such
Cheers

I'm assuming you mean ruffed grouse in the forests rather than sharp tail grouse on the plains.

For ruffed grouse I hunt over a Llewellin setter and I use either a German 16 gauge SxS that weighs 6 pounds 6 ounces or I use a 12 gauge single barrel English game gun that weighs 5 pounds even. Both have very open chokes. I use very light and slow loads in both guns, 3/4 or 7/8 oz of shot and less than 1175 FSP. I don't shoot unless they are flying.

You lucky man! Llewellins have to be the next best breed to the Gordon jk. A friend bought a Llewellin pup about 10+/- years ago. At 5 months she honoured my Gordon's squat and waited while we got over some lousy gouthe and dispatched 3 willow partridge. We showed her the worst hit bird and she insisted on carrying it all the way to the truck. She went on to be quite famous in Branch country. If he lives long enough, I'd like to breed my Gordon male with a great Llewellin.

Time and again, shooting motionless birds on the road.?? if you are after meat, it's about twenty times cheaper in the supermarket. There would be a lot more grouse if "hunters" were allowed to get them on the wing only. 20 ga and a bird dog, things cannot be any better.

I just bought 1, well may 3 dominion arms backpackers in 12 GA.. I do alot of fall backpacking and single shot with a mod choke should be perfect.. Was playing with it at range and surprisingly does well with slugs at 50m, might have to take a deer with it next year

Nimo, ground-sluicers will never understand wing-shooters. Wing-shooters will never understand ground-sluicers.

I have done both most of my life and drawn one conclusion. Dead is dead regardless of the method. Get over yourself!

I agree. Shooting them on the wing with a shotgun is bird hunting. Shooting them on the ground with a .22 is small game hunting. Same as you'd shoot a motionless rabbit or motionless tree rat. What's the big deal? :)

I'll shoot them on the ground if I get a chance or shoot them in the air if I get a chance. Ruffed grouse are my absolute favorite meal, so the thought of seeing a grouse and letting it hit the air before shooting has never crossed my mind. They're hard enough to get a shot at around here so I'm not chancing letting them go when I get lucky enough to actually see one.
