GSG Schmeisser STG 44 in 22LR Non-Restricted

Took mine out to the range today fresh out of the box. Only shot 250 rounds. First 7 25 round mags ran with no issues running Federal brand bulk 22LR ammo. Not sure on the exact specs as I bought 7000 rounds of the stuff in bulk a while back. The 8th mag started having some failure to eject issues. I focussed on properly loading the mag to ensure the rounds were stacked correctly and not nose down or rim over rim. The 9th mag has two or three stoppages, and the tenth mag ran clear through the 25 rounds.

The ammo was pretty dirty stuff. The grime was pretty noticeable on my hands from loading and inside the chamber of the gun. I think the gun was just getting gummed up from the crud more than anything. Seeing as it was right out of the box, I probably should have oiled it a little.

The sights do shoot low at 50 feet. More so in close. Not sure how to change that zero without moving the rear sight up in elevation.

Overall pretty satisfied with the gun. No regrets. It feels like a proper full size rifle shouldering it. Recoil is non-existent as is to be expected. I think I'll try some different types of ammo and see what that does to the zero.

Mag dumps are really fun. I need more mags. This was all on one mag.

Any more issues with your gun?

I just Bought one today. Now I am wishing I did not. The good is that it looks and feels awesome.

The bad is that the internals seem like complete schit to me. Plastic charging handle? A plastic spacer between the Bolt assembly and a cheap die cast spacer at the end of the action against the buttstock.

Trigger group looks fine however.

Anyone snapped off their charging handle yet. How on earth they thought that was a good idea is beyond me :bangHead:

Can you even take it off/out if it does break? I had a quick look at mine as that is one of the first things that I thought about as well. I didn't see that you could even get it out to change it.

I've questioned the integrity of the charging handle as well. Is it plastic? I was convinced it was aluminum or something, but now I'm changing my tune...gotta look when I get home.

I just put one on layaway, as it's scheduled to arrive when I'm in camp. The seller did have extra magazines though (even at almost $50 each before tax-yipes!!!). It looks cool, and it's the closest thing 99.99999999% of Canadians will be able to own to the original STG-44, the first real assault rifle made.

Look out, pop cans and gophers!!!!

So I took mine out yesterday. Started off with 5 mags of Winchester 333 and they all functioned fine with two bad primers. Then I ran 2 mags of Federal 1240fps copper plated 40gr solids and they ran perfectly. This is where everything went to hell however.

I ran a mag of Wildcats and it started catching empties in the ejection port but with a live round seated fully in the chamber 3 times through out the mag.

I Switched back to Winchester 333 but had the same failure repeatedly 4-5 times per mag after that.

Whatever it was, after those 25 rounds of wildcat, it was like flicking the jamo-matic switch that persisted.

As for the bolt charger, it held up using it like it's designed, slapping it out of it's catch notch to chamber the fresh mag. It's really dirty now though and how do you get the damn thing out of the gun?

EDIT: Accuracy... perfectly acceptable by my standards for a .22 like this. I had to put the rear sight at 900 yards to be on target at a little over 100 yards lol. I was shooting up a small frying pan.

I'd bet the reason your gun is jamming is the fouling from that Winchester Wildcat. I've NEVER seen dirtier .22LR ammo. It would routinely jam my Remington 597VTR, and it's so dirty I won't even use it in a bolt gun.

Did you clean, lube and keep dry the correct places before you took it out? I did when I got mine and it has ran great ever since! Usually shoot the Federal Blue Box through it.

Yeah she was clean and lubed up and running fine before the wild cats. Mine also ran the best with those Federal blue box 40 grain copper plated solids.
