Gun that won't bench

Does anyone else have such a beast? My henry big boy and ruger#1 do as good, if not better in the case of the Henry just taking a lean on something. I have noticed over my life probably half dozen guns, mainly levers and falling blocks that do not like sand bags. They want to be held. I am a light weight and my shoulder bones very pronounced. Maybe that's it:confused:
 
I have folded a fleece vest etc. up and stuffed it behind gunbut when doing bench work with some rifles. Think 30+ bench rnds out of a hunting stocked 338. Not ideal, but works better than nothing. Still getting 1MOAish from generic hunting rifles (usually borrowed ones that I won't add accessories to).

xept for them JM marlins. They don't follow the rule. I swear I could shoot jelly beans accurately off or on bags with my JM's

I think you have a good point there although the three I use mostly, a Browning BPCR 45-70, a '74 Shiloh 45-120, and a Ruger # 1 in 450 / 348 AI shoot amazingly well either over bags or offhand.... just my experience with those.

Despite your freakish build (you should be fat like the rest of us!) I would blame the nature of barrels and forends on the #1 and levers for the finicky performance. Try putting the sandbag underneath the action rather than the forend.

I tend to try and bend the barrels when I swing them against a metal pole in frustration, but you might be onto something.......less vibration on the hands if I just hold the muzzle end when I swing and just strike the butt against the pole..........
 
Practice your vertical shooting.
Get some strapping and paint them red set up at 100 yards. Now you have a target 1.5" wide at 100 yards. Keeping a vertical string you'll be able to figure out your rifle. Once your good enough, you can set a target up using the strappings and shoot the legs off with two shots. Piss your buddy off and let him shoot 10 rounds first at the middle target. All it takes is practice and #### load of ammo.

That does work better; the butt snaps cleanly and doesn't send harmful harmonic vibrations through the barrel. The "sweet-spot" is about 3 inches from the butt-plate. Follow through is important.

Yes for sure and that's probably where the difference lies.
Most of the shooting I do with the BP guns are with cross - sticks and then usually with the barrel supported instead of the forearm.
When I shoot them off bags it doesn't matter whether the barrel is rested or the forearm, they shoot great either way.

I've been meaning to get into BPCR too.
 
So rest er on the barrel, the fore stock whatever You want and resonance won't vary thusly effecting POI. Would never have thought. So I guess the black and white of weather a barrel should float or have a pressure point on some guns goes out the window. I guess it can touch sometimes, not other times and it's all good
 
Resting on a front bag should be the same as holding. No downward pressure. I have used a bag to support my wrist while holding the stock. If I can't get it to shot off bags or supported arm/wrist I find that it soon goes down the road. Even my Snider or Enfield 577-450 will shoot in side 3".
