Gunfighter Moment – Kyle Defoor: The 10.5″ ......

This interesting piece by Kyle Defoor came up on my FB feed, thought some here would be interested in discussing it.

It seems strange to call this "old school" but it was nearly 20 years ago. There's been lots of advances in weaponry since then, but I really can't think of anything that would make this combination outdated in any way. I'm sure it would shoot like a hot damn by any standard today.

Carbine length gas system
1:7 twist barrel

Cut down rear carrying handle
Old KAC vertical fore grip
Aimpoint comp M2

Surefire 6P wth Wilcox mount

Boonie Packer 2 pt adjustable sling (who else remembers that!!!!)

This was the original set up that we had in the mid 90s when we transitioned from MP5 to M4′s. There aren’t many people in the shooting and gun industry that are old enough to remember this. Most of us guys at Alias are though. This was the first real rifle caliber gun that we had that worked well for commando missions. Before this thing we were hose clamping mag lights onto CAR-15′s and using ACOG’s on top of a fixed carrying handle. This is the gun that both Tier 1 units originally took to war before the HK416. This set up has killed a #### ton of bad dudes. This is the gun that won the war; at least in my opinion. This is what the unit and the command had when we figured out how to fight in Afghanistan. How to do assaults, how to do infiltrations, how to do ambushes, the whole kit and caboodle.

Over gassed, yes. Needs more lube than normal, yes. Sucks for getting dirty when shooting with a suppressor, yes- but….. I’ll put it up against any modern weapon as long as it’s in the right hands.

It worked wet, it worked in the sand, it worked in the dirt, it worked at altitude and it shot out the 200 yards no problem. This was not an Army soldier’s gun, It was not a Marines rifle, It was an Assaulters weapon…Period.

Thus answering the question posed so eloquently by Rollins back in about '85...who's got the ten and a half?

FFS - thread derailed in three posts, LOL!

I owe ya one now.

The title of the article is actually: "The 10.5″ Death Machine".

I edited it out of the title because the PC got the best of me. Didn't think it conveyed the best message on this particular forum.

The Crane MK18 is used in combat to this day. The newer ones have RIS II rails, and eotechs, but its essentially the same weapon. The M16A2, M4, M4A1 and the CQB 10.3's all work...

I love the 10.5 - something about it just seems right, but they are kind of corrupting. I let a young kid who was shooting a 22 with his Dad shoot mine once and he turned and looked at the old man afterward and said "Dad, this is just F-ing awesome!" I was just about peeing trying to keep a straight face, looking at his Dad's shocked look - it was truly painful trying not to laugh.

I really wanna take a few of Kyle's courses I like the way he thinks

I used to rock a misfits patch

Probably why a tricked out BM A3 11.5 Entry is so popular with certain LE teams on a budget.

Seems like the Colt is a little heavier too but still a KA crowd pleaser.
