Looking for a reputable smith for stock work, specifically to cut and shorten a wooden stock for correct LOP. Who’s the best in Canada? I need a Winchester Model 70 super grade cut down. Help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

This is actually a really simple job. Only tools required are a recoil pad shaping jig. I’d recommend you keep the cut piece of wood in case you need it put back. Any good gunsmith should be able to do this for you. You can also buy a cheap Boyd’s stock(they’ll make it to whatever lop you want) and save the supergrade in case you ever want to sell it. Once you cut it down, you’ll never ever get what it’s worth back.

A pristine super grade stock adds value to a gun from a collector's point of view. A modified super grade stock diminishes value. A lot.

Mounting a scope on it and hunting with it diminishes value to a collector as well. What is the purpose of the rifle? Do you want a nice hunting rifle with a pretty stock that fits you, or do you want to start a collection...? If it is a pre 64 rifle I would sell it... lousy low stock for a scope...

I agree completely! That's why all my rifles are modified to some extent.
Collectors disagree. Good for me, because I'll never sell a rifle I like.

I’m not a collector, I’m a hunter. I like well-made wood and blued steel guns. Not a fan of low-budget injected-moulded fodder, no matter how accurate they make them. Model 70’s just happen to be a favourite. I have a featherweight in 7mm08, a post 64 push-feed in 35 Whelen, so I thought a nice super grade maple in 308 would top-off the set. Thanks for the recommendations.
