Guys,

I do some work for my friends on their firearms be it repairs or rebuilds. If it's restricted, I go to their place and do it there just to make it easy for both parties. Just wondering, if there is a market for a Gunsmith that does house calls? I'm Glock, SIG, Browning, Remington, Colt, Accuracy International, H&K, Knight Armament, Armalite factory certified Armourer and a licenced Millwright. Currently, I have all the gauges and tooling to build, inspect and gauge your AR-15. I'm on a 1911 kick and have done extensive work on my Colt Officers model 1911. Did the ejection port roll over, fitted a Ed Brown Beavertail safety, and recontoured the frame and triggerguard to look like that Wilson Combat style profile. I still have to machine the magwell bevel and use a round ball end mill on the right side of the frame for the slide catch lever. This service would only be for the Central and Southern Ontario area. Let me know what you think.

Sounds interesting (particularly based on your credentials...INCLUDING Millwright!) why don't you pull together a list of 'Pistol' clubs in Southern Ontario. It might offer an opportunity to perform 'maintenance clinics' at the club/range....rather than running from house to house. Would work similarly in the case of restricted long arms...

I'd be interested. For example, I need to chase a thread on a rifle in order to mount a brake.
I can't find anyone to do this simple thing and I don't have the tools.

Would machining 1911 slides for mounting optics be possible? Not sure how this is done.

AP, I guess I could put together a list of Gun Clubs and call them and arrange to put together pistol and maintenance "clinics". Obviously, it would be up to the Gun Clubs to support this. AR-15's would be the easiest for gauging and inspecting.

9mmGunGuy, I can chase threads. I would need to know the thread pitch and it can be done easily. What type of optic are you looking at mounting? I can also give you recommendations.

tiriaq, yes. I do have a firearms business licence.

Having someone like you available at the range would be pretty good, although hauling a lot of tools and equipment may become a pain, unless you know in advance what you may need.

Intresting idea but you would need a 40 ft trailer full of equipment to tow with you
If that a plan?
What is the name of you company
Also I'm not trying to be rude but I very much doubt you are a KAC armour.
As I'm sitting here talking to the only KAC armour in Canada

May be fun to try it out, but what is your time/driving around worth? will anyone pay it?
There's probably a lot more $ in doing actual millwright work on commercial stuff, where people know the value of what they're getting.

Sorry, couldn't resist... :)

How come you don't get the customers to ship their firearms to you?

I know the thread is about house calls, but are you going to drive 2 hours one way to fit a beavertail safety?

My guess is that it gets away from owners not having to get an STATT to drop off any restricted firearms to his place provided he's not a CFO approved gunsmith. He doesn't have to buy a bunch of safes to store folk's firearms at the end of the day either or deal with shipping.

The customers get the convenience of not having to drive out to his place or deal with shipping etc.

Your real problem with the idea isn't that you will need a mobile shop, or legal issues, or that you may be driving hours for small jobs.

No, your real problem is that the owner of the guns are going to watch, help, point out things to you and engage in conversation for the duration of your visit. :)
