Gunwerks

Gunwerks got a lot of people interested in long range shooting who otherwise wouldn't have. I think they have been very positive for the sport. I know a number of guys who got into it because of long range hunting shows. I have seen guys practising who never did before.Guys getting into reloading etc etc..
I am not suggesting it's all good but over all they have been a very positive influence on the sport( in my opinion).

This is the best case scenario.
I applaud the guys who went out and bought reloading gear, I commend the guys who are taking the time to learn and educate themselves on long range shooting and reloading and I ecnourage the guys that go to the local ranges or out to places where they can practice shooting at long range. I have introduced a few guys to long range shooting myself and would encourage anyone interested in the sport to give it a shot(no pun intended).

My issue is the marketing they are employing to turn the average hunter into a long range wizard just by purchasing a "1000 yards out of the box" rifle, rangefinder and windmeter. We are not talking punching paper here, we are talking killing animals. This needs to be done ethically and humanely and most guys that purchase these rifle will not learn to shoot, reload and practice enough to do this at those ranges. Quite the contrary actually, they are looking for a recipe or quick solution to being a long range killing machine at hunt camp.

I am all about these sports that involve longrange and precision shooting ie. F-class, BR, Sniper competitions... BUT Long range hunting is not something I would encourage the average hunter to do, especially when the average hunter thinks that 3 shots into a Tim Hortons coffee cup at 200 yards is good.

Really? I always thought it was awful. The name alone is enough to turn me off.

I'm waiting for the day when an ad appears with a picture of Jim Schockey "trusting his life" to a Gunwerks "system". Laugh2

Actually even better is the " Best in the West" guys ... ever watch the host of that show ? he takes these huge breaths when he talks and wabbles his head around ! So annoying to watch.

Oh and ever looked through a huskema scope ? Jesus ! there was a guy at the range i shoot at that bought a blue dimond series and slapped it on a factory remington and couldnt figure out why he couldnt hit a car door at 600 yards... I couldnt help my self. " cuz you dont have a clue about what your doing and you got sold on a piece of junk !"

Ya marketing alright ! I could make better optics from a car axle and some coke bottles.

Sedero and custom barrel insalled - $2500
Lica 1600 Rangefinder - $800
Used Night force scope - $1500
Swarovski non HD spotter with eye piece - $1600
RCBS Rock chucker supreme reloding kit - $349 At sinclair international
Wind meter -$100 or less

Knowing how to spell: PRICELESS

Marketing is everywhere in this world now days. I'd like to think that most people willing to go out and spend $8000-$10000 on a rifle and equipment would have enough common sense to realize the variables involved in making a long range hunting shot. If not they are just stupid and its damm hard to fix stupid!!

Actually, it is the high cost that is the "problem". Consumers are trained that more expensive products offer better features, performance and utility.

So, a person looking to get into LR hunting AND understanding their limitations would look at these products as a way to resolve their short comings. They are trying to make a larger investment as an intelligent choice.

Trying to buy the magic bullet.

Of course, the marketing of this and similar companies feed on that perception. They promote a system where the average Joe can just push a few buttons, dial a couple of knobs and voila, bugholes at 1000yds.

Exactly, what the novice shooter is looking for.

The marketing is not entirely wrong. It just misses out the biggest part of this equation..... user skill.

But then does Ferrari have a warning sticker on the dash for every millionaire owner to first sign up for driving school?

Ironically, firearms are about as low tech as a precision device can be. We hit a big wall of diminishing returns very quickly and regardless of costs, performance really doesn't change. But the newbie doesn't know this, uses price as a barometer and spends way more then necessary.

Then again, is a Gucci purse really worth $10,000?

Price out all the parts and gunsmithing required to build it, and I suspect you will find you can get just as good made in Canada for the same or less.

Gunwerks isn't special, they just have great advertising.

This brings up an interesting point. With the Davidson boys doing a lot of hunting, filming, editing and producing their TV show, and having done some motion picture work I have a pretty good idea of the number of hours spent per minute of usable footage, when do they have the time to build custom rifles?
Do they perchance outsource that part of the empire? And if so to whom?
I KNOW we sure don't have the time to make TV shows, attend all of the events they do, hunt much and still have time in the year to build guns.
I guess that explains why we do not have a TV show, too busy doing what we do best, build guns.

Come on guys...its 1000 yards out of the box!
pfff What a bunch of marketing Bull$hit!

Give the average guy a custom rifle, rangefinder and some custom turrets and let him believe he can go out and kill deer and elk at 1000 yards! Real f___kin smart Davidson Bros...real smart.

 couldn't have said it better. Try having a turret adjust for atmospheric conditions as well. BDC scopes, even "custom" ones are a gimmick.

Chilliwack last weekend. Sight in at 600m - start off damp and cool.

By the afternoon, sun came out - hot and temps jumped, humidity dropped a bit (at least it felt that way). Elevation dropped up to 1min for several shooters.

That is under a span of 4 hours on a known range course with EVERY shot marked on paper.

We were plotting and tracking elevation to the 1/8 min.... as in 1 click of a target scope.

Jerry, why are your posts always about you?
You must be an "A" type personality.

The original post was about a couple of entrepreneurs finding a "niche" market and running with it. "Getting it right" means being successful in your business endeavour. You seemed to view it as "competition" not surprised.

However you go off about your own business and accomplishments, I'm surprised that you didn't post the Youtube videos??

I know you are MOD and a sponsor, fair enough.
Anyway I'm sure your busy with your training courses, both civi and MIL.
Good Luck, I heard you have a UK distributor, I thought I'd give a good plug.

BTW, where is your 500 yrd muzzle loader on your website???

I would say Jerry gives the best advice one could hope to get. From actual experience. So if he specifically speaks about himself it is because of his actual knowledge and accomplishments. Maybe you should take a note and stop being an obvious troll trying to climb to new heights of douchebaggery.

Jerry does more for the long range sport in an hour than you could hope to accomplish all year. His advice is endless, his services as a buisness are tireless, and he walks the walk. How much more do you need?

Your awfully good about discussing Jerry's bio, why don't you go fill in your own profile???

Don't get your panties in a knot, I've already acknowledged Jerry's accomplishments. I'm sure your defence of him will net you a 10% discount.
And as far as your concerned GFY, LOL

I honestly can't understand why people are coming down so hard on the Davidson brothers. They have a somewhat entertaining show and offer products/services for sale. What's the big deal? They are trying to make a living just like the rest of us.
As soon as someone tries out their new Gunwerks rifle they will discover almost immediately that long range takes practise. After all who would by a system like that and not shoot it before going to hunt? Yes, they may be surprised that it is harder then it looks but I think anyone with an I.Q high enough to support life can figure things out.

Rick you need to apply to the National Film Board of Canada and get a grant. LOL. I'd approve those tax dollars. :)
You could then hire a manager and then go filming?
Maybe Jerry could help out? LOL just kidding, don't want to piss anyone off.
Just a thought?
