H4831 sc, 165 gr Hornady GMX in '06?

Let put it this way.
59.5 grains of H4831, whether short cut or long, will be a light load in a 30-06 with a 165 grain bullet.
I'm going to guess that 50.6 grains you show as a minimum load, will give the 165 grain bullet a velocity of somewhat less, maybe considerabley less, than a 30-30 would give it with a normal 30-30 loading.
That would be close to a max load for H4350, which is a faster powder than H4831. 59/60 grs. of H4831 is max load with a 180 gr. bullet. Use that powder with any 165 gr. bullet and it won't build enough pressure to give reasonable velocity.

It is difficult to get enough H4831 in a 30-06 case with a 165 grain bullet to get top velocities. As a couple have said, 4350 is a better choice with that weight.
I have been experimenting with RL 17 lately, and it is working very well, accuracy-wise.

Thanks for your responses gentlemen. I don't doubt that you're offering sound advice, but here's the deal. The loads I said I had "verbal" info on were quoted to me by someone on the phone who claimed to be looking at an 8th edition Hornady manual as the words passed his lips. I have already checked the Hodgdon data and noted it doesn't list a 4831 load for a 165 g bullet ... undoubtedly for good reason. No '06 rounds have ever left my bench loaded with 4831, but I was wanting to confirm whether or not such H4831 loads were actually published in the Hornady 8th. I have earlier Hornady manuals, but not the 8th. Again, thanks for the knowledgeable responses.
Eagleye you get out your Chroney and you won't be looking for the 4350 anymore.

I've switched to RL 17 in my 30-06 for 180's and heavier, as I'm getting VERY good velocity and perfectly acceptable accuracy with it. I have not tried it with 165's, but I suspect it will be very good as well. RL-17 seems to like any case that works well with 4350, in my experience. I also use it in my 25-06 AI, and my 300 win mag. I'll be testing it in my 338 win mag at some point.
I know Ont. Gunner means well, but published velocity data is a farce. Only using a chronograph is going to put you within a hundred miles of what speed your bullets are really doing.
Every gun is completely different. Start low, work up in .3 grain increments until you get the accuracy you want. Any sign of pressure such as flattened primers, extruded or pierced primers or sticky bolt lift and you've red-lined it.

I was asked thru pm to put this data up,, so I did.
Personally I use 56.2gr of hmr 4350 in hornady brass with a cci mag primer and 165gr interlocks and can shoot 1.25" groups at 200 yards all day long. I have no idea what that loads velocity it is,, and really dont care,, its highly accurate and thats all that matters to me!
