After fondling, polishing and worshiping my new loaded SAI M1a for over a month, I finally got to take it out. No 100 yd range was available today so I just decided to go in the woods on my in-laws farm and put a few rds through it at 25 yds. Used Federal (LC13) 7.62 x51 149 gr XM80C. First two were about 10" high from poa, and 4"to the left. Third round fired and failed to extract from the chamber. The bolt was back, and it would not move. ####. Took the mag out, and all of the pieces in the pic below fell out.

This is why so many people don't buy American cars anymore. Attention to detail. SAI knows this is a problem, but yet they keep using these CRAP extractors. This is probably the most expensive gun I will ever buy, ~1700 dollars. For that kind of money you should not get this.

Rant off.

Truth. If american meant flawless quality, it would be unthinkable to buy anything else. What it actually means is "assembled by a unionized alcoholic, that feels he deserves a bigger house than you.". That may, or may not, include better quality components, and/or quality control. Either way, you will pay more.

Bummer! That really sucks!!!

For me, I just couldn't bring myself to buy a Springfield when the Norinco option was available so much cheaper... And it's not that I don't have some $$$ guns, tavor, 1919a4, Cooper hunting rifles, ksg, glocks etc etc...

I'll admit, I've done some tweaking on my Norinco M14, but it has never failed yet, fingers crossed!

Cheers
Jay

JeeĂźe... Among another two guns I want to buy next..was a Springfield M14.. specially after seeing some issues people have had with the Norcs..

But now Im wondering if that would be a good choice at 3-4x the Norc price.

If you're going to spend big money on an M1A style rifle, go all the way - get an LRB, other than that, get a Norc. The only exception would be if you can find an old Springfield, I know of at least one "Devine" Springer in Canada, but the owner isn't selling (I tried).

Sadly, the only way to own a Springfield M14 is with a 12-3 liscence classification.
Now if you want to own the first TRUE Knock-off of the Springfield M14 .... You can buy a Springfield Armory Inc M1A :D :D

I think everyone would agree that the springfield M1A's have for the most part better parts on the rifle as a whole. Also the SA M1A will and does have better fit and finish, thats a fact, you won't see springfield send an over or under indexed barrel out or messed up front site, thats just a fact. Also I believe springfields stocks to be of better quality as well further adding to fit and finish. Having said all of that I own a couple Norinco/poly m14/m305's and have not had any MAJOR problems to date but the fit and finish on them does suck a bit. Not doing the Norinco VS. Springfield thing at all just stating what I think. I like all M14 platform rifles. Also with firearms as everyone knows sh!t happens sometimes. Some rifles you gotta work the bugs out and possibly up grade some minor parts and some rifles you can shoot constantly and just clean them now and then, nothing else. Finally I think Norinco m14/m305's are under rated and decently priced and Springfield M1A maybe a bit over priced but its also a beautiful rifle you must admit.

How about Springfield shipping an NM with a split bolt roller - as in split right down the middle, into to parts, zero rounds on the gun? It happens. Yes, they're much cleaner looking, and fitted to much better tolerances, with better finish. But shouldn't they be, given the price, frankly I think the LRB guns offer better value.

Sucks that it happened but there is lemons in everything. Fix it and move on. I find it funny how when every things working perfect you never hear about it but when something goes bad its all over the place.

Every product that is manufactured will have a certain percentage of failures that slip past QA. What distinguishes brand x from brand y is the amount. In the case of Norinco's, how many threads are posted demonstrating failures or problems. Quite a few. How many threads do you here of SA rifles having a failure? Not very many. Unfortunitly you won the lottery - in a bad way. I believe SA has a good warrenty of their rifles and hopefully they will still be able to help remedy the defect. I think all in all it's safe to say the SA makes a better quality rifle than the Norinco but sometimes failures aren't detected by QA and a defective rifle ship regardless.

Furthermore I would also like to add that even the most premium M14 receivers are subject to flaws. For those of you that think LRB is the cats ass, do some research and there are threads showing LRB receivers that are not within USGI spec. Again, not saying LRB is crap, but everybody ships a defective product that makes it through QA. It's only a question of how much. In the end you get what you pay for.

There is simply no proper numbers to compare with being that there are thousands more norc/poly's in Canada vs M1A's or LRB's for that matter.
In the US, on the top forums, there is and always has been a fairly steady diet of M1A issues. But there again, in the US, there are thousands more M1A's than norc/polys.... And LRBs :D

And there, ladies and gentlemen, is the crux of the whole norinco vs all the rest.

Over the years I've had Smith Enterprise perform 5 or 6 GI bolt conversions on Chinese receivers.
I saved all of the Norinco & Poly Tech bolt small parts as spares for my GI bolts, just in case I can't get GI/SEI parts.
The quality of these Chinese bolt parts is much better than the reproduction parts Springfield uses in their M1A.

Makes me wonder how many norcs/polytechs we have compare to how many SA they have.
