After hearing about another shooter DQing on the 'hammer down' with their CZ SP-01 at a recent match I must have had everyone come up to me and recommend different ways to safely hammer down on it. I've never slipped with the hammer using just my thumb but there were various two-handed methods being thrown at me. I bet there's probably a three-handed method. Is there a recommended wisdom on this?

Both my wife and I shoot the Shadow. We both pinch the hammer(with left hand, thumb and 1st finger) and lower forward down and holster. Several of my friends also with Shadows do the same. Never DQed.

I have never seen or heard of anyone having an AD while lowering the hammer of a CZ using the method involving rolling the thumb out of the way as the hammer is lowered slowly. The pinch method has been the culprit. The AD occurs hen the hammer has oil on on it and the thumb and finger slips off the hammer. I have seen it happen once at an IPSC match and have spoken to others who have seen it happen, all when using the pinch method. You decide.

Ah okay, so left thumb between the hammer and pin to prevent the hammer, if slipping, from coming down on the pin? If the hammer is accidentally dropped from half position would there also be a chance it would fire?

the halfcock notch should stop it from firing but remember u have the trigger fully depressed when preforming the hammer down action so technicly it would fire if it falls all the way and hit the firing pin

You just slowly roll your thumb out of the way as the hammer presses against your thumb. You let it go all the way down and don't stop at the half #### position. Safe and fool prove.

Thanks Bob. I will have to practice that one.

I know you can't leave it at half-####. I was just wondering if one did slip at half-#### when lowering it if it would still fire.

I have Had to DQ two people using the pinch method. One guy first stage of the match, only shot taken was the AD. He had cleaned his gun the night before too much oil!

I personally do the pinch method. I like the thumb method, but I'm a creature of habit and was doing it the pinch method long before I learned of the thumb method and I can't seem to make myself switch over.

I think the only truly unsafe method is using the thumb on the hand that is pulling the trigger to lower the hammer like they do in westerns. However I've seen a few people do it that way and they didn't have an AD so that way CAN be done safely, but it isn't recommended.

You did not DQ them, they DQ'd themselves, you merely notified them that they have DQ'd themselves. :)

Yeah, during the black badge course we did. One guy ADed while doing the decock with the thumb of the trigger hand. We all got spooked.

When, and it is when you have your AD switch over to the thumb roll method. I doubt there is a seasoned SO/RO who hasn't seen a AD using the pinch method. As the song goes..."it is just a matter of time...

both the act of holstering decocking should be deliberate, planned, observed and slowly done events. Letting them become "habits" leads to lackadaisical versions of both and ND/ADs going off.
