Handgun for prohibition

Good to hear you have followed the process to become a legal and responsible firearms user and hope to be owner. Dont be pressured to make uneducated decisions. Do a bit of research and decide what you want. Be excited and enjoy the moment. I am a long time firearms owner and have also just went through the process to purchase a handgun(Glock 17, Gen 5). Yes i was very anxious to finally get it so i could start shooting at our local club. I enjoyed the experience and i am loving my new pastime. Do not let the dimwits push you. Remember to stay safe and shoot straight

Thanks. I've had my pal for 10 years and have a number of non restricteds. I got my rpal because of C71 and want to be a part of the solution. Right now my funds are limited as a new father with another on the way. I'm just trying to make a good interim decision to potentially protect myself while being fiscally smart about it.

The new Glocks look nice! Have fun with it.

The progressives and anti gun ######s are counting on you to quiver and wet yourself and not get what you want. You did everything lawfully to get a legal license to purchase a legal firearm. No reason not to get one.
However though if you think 300 to 350 is a pile of money to risk then maybe you should think it over as that is really nothing on what you will end up spending once you do start down the handgun rabbit hole.

For the same $300 get yourself a 10/22, find an abandoned gravel pit and start shooting.
No expensive club fees, probation period, annoying range nazis.
Shooting at paper targets at an approved club only gets old quick.
And then take the gun hunting in the fall for delicious grouse, rabbits, whatever.

I don’t think $350 is a pile of money. That’s what I can risk losing if I get nothing. I don’t want to spend $1000 on something now to have it devalued if there are legislation changes.

Hey Travis welcome to Canada bud, nothing is guaranteed, we've been living under that threat for decades. Go out and buy what your are licensed for. How ever if you really that concerned about the money, pick another hobby:p

Why not just by a pistol frame as a place holder. They are cheap and won’t take much away from your pistol fund. Then you can take the time to ship around and try different guns with no pressure. But in the end you should do what is best for you.

Yeah buy a used glock gen 4 frame and just let it sleep in the safe if money and grandfather permit are concerns/issues.
Not many quality pistols to be had under 700$, and money does seem to be an issue right now.

I agree with the idea that $300 is not much risk and that you can buy a decent 9mm used for under $500.

Buy what you want and then fight to keep it!

I have been around to have been thought this same thought process for full autos, short barrels and 32 and 25 auto.
Some people got all in a panic and dumped guns as they did not want to loss any money, and some times would get all prissy about the cash offers, fine if dealer lose money I guess.
Than after they found out they where stupid, they wanted all their stuff back. LOL.
My point is don't listen to most of the B.S. about the change in laws????????? C 68 took years.
A norcinco 9mm can be had for your price range, I would buy a 22 semi first, center fire " light" 9mm are a hard thing to learn on,
$500.oo will get you a good new 9 mm.
I am a used gun guy, Out of 15-20 handguns , 3 have been new and that was mainly to put red dot sights on., and stock.
I would suggest if you really want the Glock ( which I don't have) , buy it, but as you say money is tight, so that may be down the road.
Lost of good Glocks on the EE market here, just look at the fellows trader rating and if you do find something, get all info, phone numbers, email, address, etc, and good pictures.
If a seller does not want to send all this info , find another gun , or check out your guns stores if you have any.

There is lots of fun to be had by picking a gun in the non-restricted class and avoiding a lot of hassles including possible storage restrictions & confiscation down the road.
A pretty decent non-restricted 22LR rifle can be had for less than $200 that you can take to the bush plinking and hunting in most provinces.

The gun clubs are a whole new potentially annoying (& expensive) bureaucracy that comes in tow with owning a restricted handgun for target shooting.
Is there one in your area or are you going to have to do a lot of driving? Are they taking new members?

Weigh all the utilitarian, cost and hassle factors & make you own decision.
You will not be allowed to use your handgun for hunting or take it to any other than an approved restricted shooting range.

Lots of money & hassle to put holes in paper.
I'd much rather a gun that I can put holes in game to fill my frying pan & freezer with.

Don't let anyone bully you or tell you that you are a wimp for not choosing to buy a handgun.
Your choice & nobody else's business.

No sorry, there are cheaper alternatives that are less hassle & more fun & productive (game for the table).
My Cooey bolt 22LR cost less than $50 and has probably produced literally tons of grouse for the frying pan & delicious rabbit stew.
Not saying the gun grabbers won’t eventually come for my Cooey but it will be many years after I’m 6’ under.
Common people still own & hunt with bolt actions and single shot firearms in the UK where handguns have been banned since 1997.

I was wondering why gunoholic was even commenting on these posts as he talks like he don't have a handgun , we are not talking about 22 rifles.

You may call Norincos and Tokarevs crap, but what is your problem with these firearms? Damn sure Tokarevs have felled their share of opponents and Norincos as well. Perhaps you should go look in a history book. Or if you can't read a book, go online and check it out.
Grab a used ruger SR9 for like 350/400 or an MP9

Screw that norinco and tokerev crap

yah what is wrong with a Tok ($250 to your door for M57) - nasty little gun with the abliity to go through most soft armour, let's see your M&P (thinking you missed the &) or SR9 do that

Really? I'm trying to make a good interim decision and ask for advice and this is the response you have. If you don't have anything constructive to contribute don't say anything and move on instead of putting people down because of how they manage their money. Go troll somewhere else.

Good on you for reaching out and for speaking out.

The way we treat our fellow members who ask for help or want to suggest new ideas for dealing with outside forces that want us gone is shameful but hey, "that's the way we roll here".

Then we moan and groan that we can't attract the new members, ladies or minorities that we so desperately need in order for our passion to survive.

Makes me wonder who raised these loudmouth pieces of work?

You need a thicker skin bud. I don't anyone is putting you down, gentle ribbing maybe, anyway you are looking for a 9mm. What about surplus Beretta or Sig police trade-in? They are around your price range. Checkout Tradex and other vendors on this forum or better yet, place a wanted ad. Good luck:)
