Handgun Storage/Transport Cases

I'm an electrician and I have a lock on my toolbox ALWAYS. As does every other person I work with who has ever had any tools stolen or "borrowed" while working. You folks wouldn't believe how much stuff grows legs when you walk away from your gear. It looks perfectly normal to me :)

Many of the matress and bedding type shops carry a wide variety of foam and they are usually the cheapest and for small jobs like pistol cases sometimes free!

Not sure if you are talking just about gun storage or also range transport but here's my 25 cents worth.

The photos show a small "HUSKY" brand tool duffel I picked up at Home Depot for about $25.00. I saw hundred dollar range bags at gun shops that weren't as good. First I took a razor blade and easily took off the brand name label. Why? Just didn't like it.

This bag is tough, treated against moisture and measures approx 16"X10"X10". It has a big brother for a bit more but I liked the compact size and feel of this one. Inside there are pockets on one side that can hold magazines etc. As shown I have 300 rounds of .45 ammo in boxes on the bottom which is rigid, a tupperware blue box holding my CQC holster, gloves, eye protection and extra mags. The black zippered padlocked gun pouch holds my trigger-locked Kimber.

Outside on the backside and on each end are a total of 10 more pockets for mags or etc. In front there is a zippered pocket for some small tools, magloader or what have you. Also I like the snap strap to secure my hearing muffs. The two stick things you see are cut-off chop sticks that fit into the seams and hold open the metal reinforced top that extra little bit. Oh and there is a metal d ring to padlock the zipper to. Of course those security measures are for if you have to show your due diligence to the nice officer or to keep out the curious. When I get home and after I clean the pistol the whole bag goes in the safe.

If you went through the trouble to lock it, then here is something inside that you DON'T want stolen. Bigger target.

If you want something "stealthy", don't use a container that will attract thieves. A safe would also attract thieves, but if its a good one it will deter 99% of them. And you can securely bolt down a safe. Tool boxes can contain expensive trade tools, high end home improvement stuff like laser levels and things like that... I should know, I once had a set of drill bits stolen out of a toolbox. It was a brand new 10 pack of bits worth 25-50$ EACH... :eek:
Needless to say, when I'm on the job my drill bits and small expensive items are now stored inside of a thermos. Unless the thief is thirsty, he should overlook it when he looks into my car :D

To bring this thread back, I picked up a case today. Its a 17.5x12.5x4 leather number lock briefcase. I would of gotten a hard aluminum on but you can't find them in black and I like the looks of this one not to mention its less inconspicuous.

This will be my new storage and transport case.

Now my question about the best way to fill it up with foam. I can think of two options one is much easier but if I did the second one properly it would look nice.

Option A ) Cut foam for both upper and lower halves of case made out of egg crate foam . Glue it in and then simply put whatever I want in and it will be held together by the bumps in the foam. This way I can move things around or put it where ever I want or take it out, hold whatever.

Option B ) Get a piece of regular flat foam to fit in the bottom half of the case with a depth of 2.75 inches. Then I would cut that down into two pieces. One would be 1.75 and the other would be 1 inch in depth. I would glue the 2.75 one down to the bottom permanently which would act as a base for the guns to lie on. Then I would cut the templates of the guns and accessories out of the smaller 1 inch foam and then lie that on top of the bigger peice and glue it in certain spots. This way I have a custom fitted case for my stuff, but if I ever need to change it around all I would have to do would be to cut a new top layer and then lie that on the bottom one, ya hear? For the top part of the case I would probably just fill it up flat so that it could hold the stuff in.

Ideas, suggestions?

I cut and removed all the stuff that I would not need, and taped the seams to make it sit inside easier and so the foam will have less to get stuck on. Tuesday I set out on a foam hunt!

OK gang, here ya go. for the low low price of $32 Canadian you can have a locking case that comes filled with foam. head to your local Canadian Tire store and let get some wonderful CT money back when you buy it too! haha, has the same type of foam in it that you see in the pelican case on the first page of this post (the tear-out-to-size kind) you can fit two handguns and four mags each!

I didn't see the pistol case last time I was at Walmart in Langford, but I was in a hurry so I would up with a lockable tool case. At Pullens this weekend, I picked up a proper two pistol case with foam and everything for around $20.

I know it's not $5, but it did seem quite reasonable.
 
I bought a plastic case from Canadian Tire, where when locked, I could easily pry open the corner and slide the handgun out. I don't use it anymore. I bought a Franzen Armloc case to replace it:

BTW, combination trigger locks are too wide to use in this case - I recommend the DAC Technologies metal trigger lock with this case - LeBaron's carries them.

It's already got some foam in it, deviders and a "flap" (for lack of a better word) for holding tools, markers, etc.
At $32.99, no huge loss if it doesn't work out.
 
That's the one I just got ... I kinda like it. Filled with foam that looks like it can easily be separated to make sections.

Gonna try it out ... and like you said, at $32 bucks you can't go wrong.

I the case Lockable? doesn't appear to be. Jack Flacket said it was, but it doesn't say that it is on the CT site...
