Again, the huff started with the intolerant "merry Xmas only" crowd. The rest of us are fine with whatever you want to call it. We, the rest, just arent going to let the intolerants tell us that we cant say "happy holidays" or whatever we want to say in this free and pluralistic country.
So, merry Xmas to you!

Atheism is indeed non-belief in that for which there is no evidence of existence. For example, I dont believe in Poseidon or the god of Abraham or santa claus. What we naturalists (a far better term) believe in is based on fact, observation, evidence, scientific investigation. And yes, we do try to get others to embrace reason and rationality vs. magic and mysticism.

Suggested reading for the holidays: The Demon Haunted World by Carl Sagan, or Letter to a Christian Nation by Sam Harris, or The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins, or God Is Not Great by Christopher Hitchens. Enjoy.

:D Ah, so the name has changed now from Atheist to Naturalist and the catechism is taken from books by Carl, Sam, Richard and Chris instead of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, as the proselytizing continues. At least we can both agree that Atheists don't exist. You might add to your reading list "The True Believer" by Eric Hoffer.

Enjoy your beliefs as I do mine and do indeed have a "Happy Holiday". I certainly wouldn't wish you a sad one, it is after all, "Christmas". ;)
 
They just wanted to be nice and wish us happy holidays. I'm sure they do not wanted to create a debate on what should be christmas.

LOL! Semantics, semantics...
We don't agree. "Atheist" is, in a sense, a term without content, ie/ no belief regarding gods and other such mythical creatures, but it is a well-recognized term for people like me. I simply prefer the term "naturalist" b/c, after all, I don't have to go around describing myself as an "a-numerologist" or an "anti-astrologer" now do I?

BTW, the difference betw/ my perspective and yours is that I don't need to have "faith" that something exists despite zero evidence. Thankfully, scientific inquiry has no place for faith. As such, it is almost trite to state that my authors' writings are firmly based on science and facts...vs. magical fantasy. (NB: I've read the entire New Testament.) Another stark contrast is that they would welcome debate and having their beliefs challenged. Ya know, 'cause that is fundamental to science.
Next time, before drawing tenuous parallels betw/ religious dogma & scientific thought, look up "specious argument".

I do not believe in God Santa Claus or the tooth fairy. My family and my country celebrate Christmas and so do I. Christmas is not about religion to me it is about a special time where friends and family unite. Please feel free to wish me a Merry Christmas happy Hanukkah or whatever else you celebrate as I do not take offense but do not shut down others right to call it Merry Christmas

Who was offended by Merry Christmas? I see no reason to be. Well I am a little offended at the one who wanted me to marry more Chris' ... a joke a few of you will get.

As some of you said, we live in a Christian country. I was born here, but am Jewish by birth; does this make me less of a Canadian?

I think not.

I did not choose to be born here, but I did choose to stay. In doing so, I accept the country I live in. I wish people Merry Christmas all the time. Chances are they are Christian and celebrate the event. Those that are obviously not Christian, I try and wish them happiness in a way that would suit them. Those that get mad, I apologize and move on. Tolerant aren't they :)

No time in my 40 years on this planet has anyone asked me or any of my Jewish family if we are offended by the wonderful greetings that come out this time of year. Merry Christmas ... oh no ... stop with the well wishes. Does it matter that I am Jewish ... not to me ... wish me what you want.

It is an extended pause, not a sssssssstutter.

For the person making a comment about Jews and others not celebrating something important at the end of the year: Whose year? Yours? Mine? Lunar? Solar? Gregorian? Chinese?

Please remember that some of us follow older religions/cults/callitwhatyouwant that have been around for thousands of years prior to the invention (yes it was invented) of Christianity.

Atheists, Christians, Muslims, whatever you may believe, I have a goal for you: Try being nice to people.

Laugh all you want, but we as a people do not practice what we preach.

I thank Wanstalls for being the store that they are. Each and everyone of them has had to put up with my unrelenting questions for a little over two years now. Each question is responded to with a well informed and professional answer. We laugh sometimes, but mostly they have become a valued pool of information I use when purchasing firearms. I only have 10, but I think the new year (2013, Gregorian), will bring me more.

I hope everyone takes time to understand that if we want to be tolerated, we too must be tolerant. If a saying such as Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas offends you, perhaps it is time to look inwards and not outwards.

LOL! From your comment it appears that you didn't actually look up the definition of "specious". Or understand the fundamental difference between facts/science & faith-based beliefs. Keep trying!
But anyway, yes, promoting reason over unreason. All day. It certainly was a breeze...

Good Day All! Fairly new to the gun scene so I haven't had the opportunity to shop at Wanstalls yet, but I do look forward to doing business with them, certainly after reading through this very entertaining thread and finding all the positive comments!

I am impressed by the variety of opinions, backgrounds, beliefs and such that are present throughout this entire site. I find surprise debates in threads all the time. It's non-stop fun.

My two cents: we too easily get offended by other people. Superimposing our perceptions onto other people's words and giving them intentions will always be a detriment to communication. But hey, we're only human! That's the nature of debate, right? I also feel a little sad that some are so quick to dismiss the "magic" in our world because it cannot be measured in a beaker. It's there for us to see and feel every day. We can't say it doesn't exist just because we haven't invented a manufactured instrument to quantify it yet (there is a natural one beating in our chests). Most likely we never will; as the scientific minded aren't going to start working on it and the believers don't need it.

I think that's enough chit chat for a newb.

Thanks to Wanstalls for their warm sentiments and to all you gun nutz out there for providing us with your thoughts, insights and opinions as well as tolerating mine.

Christmas is fun at my house I'm raised Cathlioc, my wife is Of the Jewish faith and we have two adopted kids one is muslim the other is Hindu. We have three sets of pots, three fridges, three kinds of meat. You all think you deal with a bit on the merryxmas/happy holidays try my living mine field.
