Has anybody put those 8x57 MG-42 barrels from Marstar to a good use?

No offense Jerry, some of these shot were pretty long.:)
Hathcock would eventually be credited with 93 enemy confirmed killed, including one Viet Cong shot dead by a round fired from a scope-mounted Browning M-2 .50 caliber machine gun at the unbelievable range of 2500 yards.

halger, sniping with a Browning 50 cal is a wee bit different then the sneaky bolt action crowd. I don't think they really meant one shot one kill extended distances. If I remember those scoped MG's just made it alot easier to direct fire. 2 MOA is plenty accurate enough for a BMG.

See how happy you are if your rifle project turned in that type of accuracy.

Well for $25 it is certainly worth a try!

I have a similar project in mind, but will rebarrel a No4 Mk 1 with a toasted barrel to 8x57R. Going to cut the chamber with a standard 8X57 reamer, the rim recess with a cuttting tool, and the extractor groove by hand.

Actually, I see you can get two for $40. Freight will be the same, and there are lots of ugly 303s around that need new barrels. Will be nice to have a bore diameter that one can actually get the correct bullets for. :D

I called and ordered two, and apparently the threads are there, but the "cam part has been removed", so I guess that the pic on the website is the real thing. Has anyone here actually seen and handled one? I understand that they're about 23" long, but will be closer to 20" once they're cut and re-threaded. What is the diameter at the existing threads and at the muzzle?

when we ordered the guy said that they were 1.103 at the thread end and .854 at the muzzle and 24.25 long hope he measured right

If that's the case, then we could be SOL to use it for a Large Ring Mauser (1.110 inches in diameter with 0.625 inches of threaded area at 12 TPI). Although I have heard of it having been done.

Well the one on the swede 98 I made into 8X63 is 1.095

So I think we will be ok.....with any luck:)

Got mine. I'll need to cut off the 1 1/2" threaded portion to use it in a Large Ring Mauser. That will leave a 23" barrel that's 1.100" at the receiver end, and 0.800" at the muzzle. Stiff to say the least. At $25 ($40 for two), you don't have much to lose.

Just got my barrels from Marstar. They look so benchrest and the crowns are so clean. Stiff indeed.
And the threads are there.
They short shipped, but that's getting rectified right now.

Had a good look at the bores - not "Excellent' by a long shot. One was shiny, but the rifling was worn, the other was shiny with sharp rifling for the first 20" and then the bore was pitted. I will speak to Marstar about that and am confident I will come out satisfied.

Have yet to look at the bores. Lots of cosmolene.
One thing I noticed that I was not impressed with were the vise tracks on the barrels.:kickInTheNuts:
When I spoke with the order guy, he stated they were NEW.

Mine are both perfect. I also picke up one of the Breda HMG bbls for $49, what a monster.
There is definitely more than enough meat on the Breda bbl for any size action. Will probably go on a P17, in 8x63. bearhunter

Pitted bores!

Checked out two barrels and both pitted. They have been shot quite a bit, lots of carbon on the breech and at the muzzle. I would consider this kind of condition fair to good, but in no way excellent. Once I receive the other two, these are going back. I am not going to tolerate the pitted bores after they advertised them es excellent and represented them on the phone as new.

BEARHUNTER;
You mention using your Breda barrel for 8x63, that won't work very well....
Later (post 1918) Mauser is .323in whereas your Breda M-37 is .327 if my memory serves me.

Thanks Camk nd johnone, I was informed of that when I bought the bbl. I'm going to give it a try anyway,

By the way, it slugs out to .3245, a pleasant surprise.

It doesn't mean it will shoot well, but it won't hurt to try.

Speaking of 8x63 bolt guns, got a call from Lee last week. Our short run of dies (Andy and I put this together) is finished and is en-route. Andy is handling sales of any unsold sets.
