Has anybody put those 8x57 MG-42 barrels from Marstar to a good use?

I am really surprised, the bore must be unfired....
I have some original ammo for these MGs, if you need a couple deactivated rounds for comparison let me know....
And do keep us posted on your progress....

I'm surprised too. I have a box of 50 of the 8mm Breda ammo, and the bullets are 0.327". A strange round: a boat tail spitzer with a very small flat, about 0.250" long where it's at 0.327" - the rest is all taper.

johnone, thanks for the offer, but I bought several crates of the 8x63 swede and now that I've obtained a reamer, need to do something with it.

Just slugged the bore again, and it still measures .3245 in.

COTW lists the 8x59 Breda rounds as varying between .322 and .326 diameter and 2600 fps with 210 grain bullets. A pretty powerful round.

Maybe this is why the middle of the road or tight bore.

I think it will make a fine 8x63 Swede bbl next winter.

As for the MG34 bbls on closer inspection, one is near perfect with no noticeable wear and one has some very slight throat erosion, which should clean out when reamed.

Speaking of 8x63 Swede, the dies are NOW AVAILABLE. Contact Andy. They are here in Ottawa, ready to ship.

This was a really small run, so if you need a set, you'd better get cracking and e-mail now or you WILL miss out.

This is the condition my MG34 barrels arrived in

It saddens me when firearms are bubba-ed, but when something is butchered and presented as new, excellent condition, I become very angry.
In addition to the vise marks, their bores are pitted heavily.

I was gonna order some of these barrels till i saw this thread, was told on the phone they were excellent as well.... now that i've read some comments here... and those pictures   .... hell i can pick up beat up pitted tire irons at the local swap meet for 5 bucks.... why would I spend 40 sumthin for a tire iron with no lug wrench at the end :D :D
gonna have to pass

I bought four and used the worst one in a deactivation job. The other three had some use but were in better shape than most used 98 Mauser barrels I have seen. A few small vise tracks but they will turn off in the lath and can be polished out. I would recommend that anyone having visions of rechambering these buy a carbide reamer as the steel in these barrels is extremely hard and will ruin a standard high speed steel reamer in short order.
I feel that they will make a good barrel for a bolt rifle and at the price they are going for you can have a low cost custom build to play with. My intention is to bump up the chambers to 8MM-06. This will clean up the throat and make a good serviceable round for any 98 Mauser rifle.

Years ago Marstar had some 8mm ball advertised as FN manufactured and great condition so I ordered 1000.When it arrived a third of it was coroded/green and a mix of Syrian/Egyptian/FN and Israeli from "The Six Day War"! Threw out the worst of it and we havn't done buisness since. You don't get a second chance to make a first impression.............Harold

FYI I just re threaded and chambered one in 8x63 swede the steel is not any harder than any other steel I've encountered
in fact it cut very nice like butter:)

you end up with a 23 1/4" barrel

not too shabby for a $25.00 bbl

Good to hear - I have the exact same plans.;)

6.5 Swede Barrels for Moisin Nagant?

How about the Mosin to 6.5  You would at least have a better selection of bullets.

Tradex has Brand new 6.5 Barrels for 95$, Im not sure how much work it would be or if they can even be adapted to a mosin receiver. I think 6.5x54 R could be interesting if possible.

The barrel shank is too small. Swedish Mausers use the Small Ring barrel size and thread. There is not enough meat on them to make Moisin Nagant threads on the barrel.
