Has anybody used RKS in Alberta for rebore

Wow! RKS is still at it? Good for them!

I remember being shown a Rem 700 BDL with an RKS medium-heavy barrel on it over 31 years ago.

It was stainless steel and chambered in 7mm-08 Rem. I think it was fluted too.

IIRC, it printed tight groups and the owner was very happy with it.

If their standards haven't slipped in the last three decades, then I'd go with them.

Cannot help the OP with his rebore question, but I have a Smith gain twist bbl on my 275Rigby and I like it a lot.

I'm betting the rest of his work is top notch as is his reputation.

Hey all

I want to Rebore a 6.5 rem mag to 30 cal and have got a line on a guy(and his son i think?) who do this kind of work in Alberta, rks enterprises

Has anybody dealt with them? Are they legit? Do they do good work?
I have several rifle barrels re-rifled by this gentleman, his work is always been
Excellent you can't go wrong with RKS

So your using a 30-6.5 Rem Mag ( 6.5 rem mag necked up to 30 cal ) is that what your sayin ? 🤷🏼‍♂️RJ
Back in the day the 6.5 and 350 Rem Mag cases were necked up and down to everything from 22 to 458. I had numerous versions (the 7mm-350 being a particular favorite) and have a good friend who built the 30 version maybe 10 years back or so. In a slightly longer action than the 600 you can stretch your coal and make it ballistically into something very close to a 30-06 AI ballistically speaking. It's a good round. - dan

Dan I appreciate what your sayin BUT there pretty RARE those necked up 6.5. Remmys - although both the 7 mm and the 30 cal versions would make a Good cartridge anytime still . 👍. RJ

The 6.5 PRC now necked up to 7mm ( 7-6.5 PRCW ) is getting Very Popular . 😀
They're rare now for sure. But I probably knew a half dozen guys personally who built versions of them in the 70s and 80s. 600/660 actions were cheap at the time (I think I've probably owned a dozen that got built into something else, along with XP100 actions) and a lot of guys built on them because of that. Kind of a shame, the magnum versions are certainly worth a lot more now days if they're unmolested. My friend who built a 30-350 a couple years back used a MRC action. Mostly because they were a great deal when they first introduced them and hes a southpaw, which limits the options. - dan

I just picked up my savage 99 rebored to 358 Winchester from Ron, cost was about $450. Had him do the gain twist rifling. Also gettin a barrel put in an old model 1917 eddystone (458WM)

I think Ron just turned 90 years old, He is a legend and his gain twist rifling can apparently be seen at many competitions.

His hearing isn’t the greatest so you have to talk loudly, he doesn’t move as fast these days but his son and apparently grandchildren help out in his shop.

The 458WM will be the fourth gun I’ve had him put together. The others a rebore on a Steyr (9.3x62) and thread and install a CF barrel on a 788.

He probably won’t be doing work for much longer, and I feel lucky to have met him, got a tour of the shop and own some of his work.

It may be your last chance for a RKS gain twist barrel too soon, though I’m sure the business will go on. His son Gerald did work on my 788 and seems skilled and friendly as well

Remington 600, originally in 6.5 rem mag, opened up to 30 cal. Essentially got all the power of a 30 06 in a short action
Okay I have to ask, you took a Remington Model 600 in 6.5 Remington Magnum and re-bored it to 30 caliber?

Do you have any idea on what that rifle was worth before you did this?

If it was shot out, I get it. If it wasn't, you just neutered a rifle that many of folks would have paid big dollars to own.......:(

If you want to make an offer on my 2nd 6.5 try me,

Tried to sell it for years and nobody would buy it.

Not as valuable as one may have thought
The last Remington 660 (laminate), 6.5 Remington Magnum I saw sold for $1700.00. I have seen asking prices close to $2000.00. Not sure if the seller got his asking price though.

Th 600 models were not that far behind in these asking prices.

In saying that, the firearms market is now correcting itself since the covid-scam and everything skyrocketed to ridiculous levels. I would think a Remington model 600 or 660 should still be valued at $1000.00.

Sorry to hear you could not sell your model 600 in 6.5 Remington Magnum. What was your listed price?

As I stated above, firearms are slowly coming down from the crazy price hikes. The 6.5 Remington magnum ammunition is becoming more and more difficult to find, as is the 350 Remington magnum ammo. This unfortunately creates the few remaining boxes of factory ammunition to skyrocket in price, all the while dropping the value of these once great calibers.

These two awesome calibers came in way before their time. Smaller rifles that kicked like a mule in the 350 Remington magnum caliber and power that no one knew how to appreciate. If these same two calibers just came out today, I would assume the outcome would have been completely different.

The 6.5 PRC is the new kid on the block, I predict this caliber will eventually make the 6.5 Remington Magnum obsolete. Except for the cult type followers who love this caliber, and the Remington Model 600, 660 models.

What are you currently asking for your second 6.5 Remington magnum model 600 rifle now? I'm sure someone is reading this and may be interested, even me!.......:)

Maybe post a picture with your response, my guess is it will get snaped up.

One more upvote for Ron and Gerald. Ron made the barrel for my rolling block, so now I have a very stylish single shot 30-30 with gain twist rifling. He also rebored a badly shot out 94 in 32-40 to 38-55. That gives me a 100-year-old rifle wth a brand new bore.

Next up will be a 94 carbine that left the factory as a 32-40 and now has a barrel with no rifling in it whatsoever and a finish like a cave. Zero reflectivity. Never seen one shot out so badly. She'll be happier when it's a 38-55 like her big sister. Gerald will do that work for me.

Do I need two 38-55 chambered 1894 Winchesters? Probably not. But it ain't about need, is it? :)
