Did a deal on a Stoeger Coach Gun and I am toying with the idea of cutting the stock down and shaping it to a pistol grip. I would clearly be keeping the overall length greater than 26" so it stays Non Restricted.

Thoughts?

go for it! make sure to post pics. I think you can go shorter than 26" thought since the receiver and grip will give you OAL over 26"

No it's a bad trend. Sounds like a waste of money. Sure on a $100 Cooey or other single shot cheap gun.

Hook a tape measure on the muzzles.
Swing back, marking the stock at 26+".
Find out if there are any stock bolts etc, in the area.
Ask yourself, apart from the awesome uberkewlness of such a modification, what would be accomplished apart from having a gun whose photos posted on the 'net would impress the mall ninjas, and junior teenagers.

Exactly right. This is the Hunting and Sporting Shotguns forum and chopping a gun in the manner described makes it far less suitable for those purposes.

Might be worth trying the question in the Black and Green Shotgun forum. It's beneath this one.

Understood, but the purpose isn't for "mall ninja" or "uberkewlness". I do a lot of backcountry backpacking in remote areas so pack space and weight are at a premium. A folding stock or a pump are still long enough and heavy enough to mess around my pack configuration and get hung up on branches. More shotgun weight means less food/water/gear I can hump.

The guys that hunt sheep and caribou etc seem to make out fine carrying heavy packs and a full length rifle or shotgun. Maybe you should ask them how they manage that.

If that is some sort of shot at my physical fitness or stamina I would challenge you to a ruck march with full combat load and "full length rifle" and see who drops out first. I would challenge those hunters too.

I think I know a bit more about self sustainability and combat effectiveness than the weekend or weeklong hunter.

The lever that opens the action will recoil into the web of your hand. Anyone who has ever fired a pistol grip pump will tell you it is unpleasant, now add to it a pointy piece of metal that can spear you.
