Has anyone had a laminated rifle stock split? Or not?

Im thinking about getting one. Has anyone had any problems with one? Splitting or otherwise? It would be a Boyds.

I had one on a XR-100 that was split through the thumbhole when it was brand-new in the box. Otherwise, no problems. I don't even know anyone who was broken one but anything is possible.

Like any stock proper bedding is essential. If the action is moving there is a good chance it will split eventually.

This. I had a Ruger in .338 bought new in 1996 and I went thru no less then three stocks before I got one that didn't split. I finally took the factory stock and properly bedded it and no more problems. The first two split in less then a half a dozen rounds.

I have a Boyd's lightweight varmiter on my 30-06, it's stood up to 5 years of handloads. Never had a problem, I added steel lugs and bedded the action when I got it.

Never had a Boyds split, did have the only Richards I ever bought split and a piece behind the bolt fall off,

I have 3 boyds featherweight thumhole stocks one in 30-06 a .223 and an 8x57 Mauser. Had them for a few years, and many rounds at the range. All bedded and no splits. In fact there was a noticable improvement in accuracy with the 30-06 and especially the .223 over their factory stocks. Such great stocks from Boyd's.

Any stock will/can crack, ecspecially through the wrist area. Ways to help with this problem are to bed the action which evens out the recoil forces in the action area, have the grain flow lines correct in the wrist area or install steel reinforcement in the wrist. Would I not buy a laminate stock in fear of it cracking-no I would not worry about it, I have seen way more wood stocks cracked then laminate. I have tried to break laminate used for gun stocks and it is a lot harder to crack then walnut or maple.

Wow. If I bought one it would be going on a .308, but Im not liking what I'm hearing.

Do you have a stock on your gun now??? Well, your new laminate stock from Boyd's will at least twice as strong. It is relatively rare for a laminate to split... the epoxy resin is far stronger than wood, and the thin sections of laminated wood are partially impregnated by the resin... this strengthens every thing. I have dozens of Boyd's stocks and have never had any problems... they have an excellent, durable product... far stronger than a single piece self stocks... but it's hard to beat a nicely figured chunk of walnut against rich bluing for looks... but to get it you will pay 5-10 times as much (or more).

I've used a Boyds Classic laminated stock on a 375magnum w/o any problems at all. Glass bedding helps prevent splitting issues.

Its a stainless remington with one of the new tupperwear synthetic stocks. I ordered a Boyds classic. should be much better. Ill have it glass bedded for sure now.
