One of my resolutions for 2015 was to finally get myself a Cooper rimfire, but I cannot find a Custom Classic with nicely figured, darker wood....anywhere.

Has anyone taken the plunge and ordered a full-on custom Cooper rimfire creation? If so, how was the experience?

This is an example of what I'd call a "perfect" Cooper (property of Bullet Bob on the S&W forum):

I have ordered a Few Coopers. I wanted a Jackson Hunter with the ebony fore end, so Prophet River supplied a New Zealand blank, and had Cooper make one for me. Given that our dollar was much stronger then, my cost was no more than a standard Custom Classic goes for now.

That's a beauty SJ! It has that "wow" factor that is missing from so many of the stocks I've seen recently.

You choose a blank, and you take your chances, but you can be sure that Clay at Prophet River will make sure that the process goes smoothly in any case.
 
Did you by chance place an order yet? I just stopped in at Prophet River today, and someone just placed an order for a custom Cooper using a dark Turkish walnut blank. I also saw an absolutely amazing looking new Zealand walnut blank in the store. It is the nicest looking New Zealand walnut blank that I have seen.
 
They had a 240 wby on their site that was gorgeous in new Zealand hardwood. However I think it was $5000+. Not sure if it's there still but I had the credit card out once. I have to many projects on the go to finish first
 
As part of an order for a custom rifle, the cost is basically negligible, but there is no refund for the wood Cooper *would* have provided themselves. When the exhibition grade claro is a ~$2k US upgrade option through Cooper, you can see how it makes very good sense to carefully pick the blank you like, and have PR send it to them as part of an order.
 
There is/was a Cooper on the EE in the Rimfire section earlier today.
Cooper 57M 22LR Jackson Squirrel Rifle not sure if that is custom enough for what you are looking for.
They sure do find some pretty wood for their rifles and the one in the opening thread is a fine example.
The Cooper in the EE does not have the wood that the OPs' has...but it is a nice gun for sure.
SJ has an interesting piece there as well.

Well it showed up, it's nice but not really what I had expected. You win some and you lose some.

Well GD7, iffen your that disappointed in your Cooper, I can come and get it from you.
I'll be in Kamloops on Saturday and can swing through the other K town and take it off your hands for 5 hundie or leave my CZ455 for you to drool over?
Does Cooper shoot them for accuracy before delivery and provide the target?
Looks very nice and please share your results with its ability to shoot please.

I would not expect the wood to be that light looking t the blank. Your blank looked a lot nicer than mine, but when you choose a blank, there is a fair bit of luck involved as to what the finished stock will look like.
 
It's possible that it just milled out super light, but I remain pretty skeptical. The blank has long, curling and swirling grain that goes from dark to light, whereas as the finished product has short, nearly straight grain that is light throughout.
First world problems, I know.

I'll be at the Kamloops show on Saturday too. The test target measures out to around 0.4 MOA, if your CZ is a 17 HMR it'll probably be pretty close to the same. If accuracy was my utmost concern, I'd have bought an Anschutz :p
 
GD7, that's still a very nice looking stock--far better than many I've seen in pictures of Cooper rifles. The wood has some very interesting highlights in it--really outstanding.

So, it took 20 months, did it, from placing the order to receiving the rifle? That's quite a bit longer than generally advertised. Was there a reason for this--a bottleneck somewhere in the process?
 
We have two rifles from Cooper on this last batch of about 50 that has the same situation. Also, I have a custom classic 358 that looks very much like this that was from same batch of turkish. We are still a bit uncertain what has happened. We clearly tag the wood to the order and have had only one time (until now) that rifle was built with incorrect wood.My 358 was on a load before this. I'll put up pics on Monday. So, either Cooper had a mistake with three rifles ordered at nearly the same time or this batch of turkish was way lighter than how they looked.
