Have you ever broken a good modern scope?

I must admit that I've owned quite a number of 4200 and 3200 scopes over the years and thought I'd used them fairly hard and never did I have a hiccup with one. Makes a person wonder how one individual could break that many....that is some serious bad luck. The only scope I've ever broke was a Nikon but a horse fell on it and broke the stock on the rifle too so not much surprise there. I do have a Burris where the reticle rotates slightly after every shot but I didn't break it, it was defective from the start.

I think some of you have missed the word ........... "Leadsled"
Loaded down with weight, they have busted stocks too.

Was Dogleg using a leadsled? He gave too little information to ascertain the cause of the breakage. "just mounted them and shot them" implies he mounted them, took them to the range, fired a few rounds and the scope fell apart. Of course, that can't possibly be true, but who knows what really happens with information given in 6-10 word replies?

I honestly can't believe they still sell Lead Sleds....I've seen a number of broken stocks on gunsmith's shelves as a result of shooting out of them. I've never heard of scope issues but I guess it does make sense. Just another reason not to use one.

Awhile back there were threads with glass shouldered lead sled owners vehemently denying that their pussy props could possibly hurt a rifle. People get right defensive; possibly out of a desire to put their mouth where their money went. I cracked one stock on .416 with one, and that was enough for me.

Viper PST, but it was broken right out of the box so I guess that doesn't count.

Mueller tactical & Falcon Menace both died on me.

..have yet to break a Nightforce, Leupold, Nikon or Bushnell Elite.

Not a $300 scope but Simmons 3-9X-40 died out of the box after 15 shots 308. The cross hairs went 60 degrees off horizontal. I got a new one on warranty and no problems 150 or so rounds later. Chit happens.

I had to go dig deeper on Bushnell problems, and I found this thread:

Bottom line: This reminds me a lot about car discussions. GM guy bought a Ford in the past that broke down, and now Ford is the worst most unreliable manufacturer in the multiverse. That's the gist of it. Bushnells are affordable so almost everyone has tried one, and therefore based on numbers alone, there are that many more people to report issues. Most people however, seem to have no issues with Bushnells.

Of the four failures involving 3200s that Clarke mentioned, all of them were used in the mountains and banged
on rocks, and three of them were on magnum rifles. Of all the hunters I know that have Bushnell scopes, I've
heard of two 3200 failures over the years and none in the 4200 or 6500 series. Previously we've heard from a
sheep and goat hunter who bashed his Elite scope on the rocks numerous times over six years of mountain hunting
before it fogged up and was replaced under warranty. A lot of us have used Elites for years, have banged them against
trees and whatnot, and they've been fine. If you're a woods hunter they'll do a fine job for you, and you'll appreciate
their Rainguard coating if you're hunting in the rain. If you're after mountain sheep and goats, well maybe the Leupold,
being a bit tougher, might be the best option. For the average hunter, the Elites are excellent bang for the buck.
If you ever have a problem, yes the warranty is slow, but you paid a very reasonable price so you can buy another Elite
and be back in the woods the next morning...Leupold at two weeks can't come close, lol! When Bushnell sends you a
new scope in six months or so, sell it and get your money back or put it on a new rifle...if you ever need the warranty,
which most of us here have never had to use!

I'm not purposely trying to disbelieve you, I just have so little information to base my opinion on. I would love to read what you have to say and learn from your experiences. Thanks!

a leupold vxII 3-9x40 (after 10 shots wont keep the setting and not able to keep a tracking) killed by a 375 ruger but two set of Warne Quick detach followed too ...

a leupold m8 fixed x3 called alaskan survived the treatment but again a set of Warne QD didnt like the 375 ruger. i have a bunch of spare parts for Warne but the rings are gone forever as the scope none were sold here nor nowhere else ...

When I do research on "Leupold broken" I get a lot of hits, about as much as "Bushnell broken" hits proportionate to the number of them out there. I think that maybe Leupold's better service and cognitive dissonance related to the cost of Leupold plays a factor in the selective memory of brand bias. Also, you're more likely to take care of a Mercedes than a Dodge Neon, which may explain why Benzs look less sh!tty when you see them on the road than Neons.

I've broken a leupold, an elite 3200 and an old redfield.

Leupold was a 2-7x33. Something rattled loose inside. Everything still worked, adjusted and held it's adjustment...but something was loose. Leupold fixed it. Same scope a couple years later had to be sent in b/c there was a black flake on the interior of a lens.

Elite 3200 3-9x40mm adjustments went haywire (a click would maybe move a 1/4" maybe 6" or maybe nothing at 100 yds) after a bunch of rounds on a 17hmr and only 50 or so on a .270. Bushnell sent me a new one...which I sold.

The redfield was old and had f'ed up adjustments. Once zeroed it was good. Then one day and it went ker-chunk after a shot and the ocular lens had a big crack through....so I pitched it in the garbage can.

I still use leupolds, and have an old B&L 4x that hangs in there. I wouldn't be afraid to run a bushnell 4200 or better either.

Every manufacture produces scopes that crater. I know of upper end Leupold, Nightforce and Zeiss that have failed in one way or another (not my own scopes however). It happens.

Well I had my cheapo simmons 22 mag scope get knocked. Rested my rifle on a rest, and it toppled over and landed right on the scope. Couple feet. Thought it was a goner, but it was fine. Deep. Breath.

I had a vortex viper that worked fine for the first 50 rounds on my M14, then decided that the reticle belonged somewhere where all I hit was dirt about 2 lanes over. It cost me somewhere around $300 and vortex sent me a brand new one free of charge.

I did the same thing: after 50 rounds a M14 shook loose two lenses in a Bushnell worth around $350.00 new. $12.00 in shipping and a new one sits on the shelf as a spare: I have a Leupold "on sale demo" from site sponsor P&D that cost me less than $250.00 taxes in and it is fine after hundreds of rounds.

Sometimes they just kick the bucket from something that others can take.

I have a 3200 that holds zero great, but has a jiddery/wonky adjustment, gonna put it on my 10/22 since it will be cheap to sight in. (Hopefully) It worked fine on the .270 but my muzzleloader killed it.
