Last night I was awocken by my wife telling my that she thought there was somebody in the house, so out of bed and off to the gun room I went and then returned with my short barreled 870 to start clearing the house. As I started up a set of stairs I realized how awkward my shotgun was and that if there was a bad guy around the corner at the top of the stairs I would be at a huge disadvantage to a prowler with a handgun. So it turns out to be just a raccoon nosing through the trash, but all this had me rethinking my whole plan. Now I do own a few handgun (1911, BHP, and a H&k usp .40) but none are setup for homedefence, so I think I'm going to deck out the usp with an M6 light laser combo (I like the laser for intimidation more than aiming) and maybe some Trijicon night sites plus some frangible ammo. So I would like to hear from the people that plan to defend there family's with handguns, what kind of handgun are you using? What are your plans and preparations?

USP 9mm. IF that isnt enough the 14inch 12 guage will used. But I would rather just lock myself in the washroom soil my panties and call the police. I also keep an ASP and Maglight handy.

yeah theres issues with noise and muzzle blast from ARs and Shotties...at night could render you deaf and blind if used inside a dark hallway...

Although I would prefer my .45... THe odds of my USP failing are pretty low.. cant say the same for my 1911.

Have you thought about frangible 9mm ammo?

P.S. I consider the 1911 to be every bit as reliable as the usp, the yanks used it for 75 years so that should say something about them.

yeah dont get me wrong, I really like the 1911s...but I wouldnt go so far as to call them bug free. A USP with any kind of ammo will probably feed it flawlessly even when filthy. I am much more accurate with my 1911 but occasional ammo issues or the odd stove pipe would not make it my first choice. What the army does or doesnt use is more to do with financial considerations then actual performance... Case in point the Beretta.

I think a 9mm say a 147 flatnose or a hot loaded +P is more then up to the job. The only thing lacking on the USP is abit of wierd stock trigger creep.

the yanks did allot of things :) I vot for bhp with gdhp(115grn)... and a light(not on the gun). most any firearm is going to have deafning blast in a building.. except a 22 rifle. But since my handguns are locked up... I usualy just use a light, and grab a steel rod that I was going to use for a project... when something is fishy.

No not really. I cant imagine a situation that would call for more than a couple of shots at the most.

Well I don't think one should be pointing a loaded gun at something just to look at it for one thing... and in the dark, someone is likely to grab for the light I would think in an altercation. If you have to discharge a gun in self defence... a few bullet holes in walls is the least of your worries.

yeah its more of an issue when the rookie swat guy lets go a nice sizeable burst from his MP5 and misses and hoses the entire wall of the crack apartment and it goes through the wall and kills the 3 generations of migrant workers living next door.

Lots of possible situtations out there.

Equally effective would be a rather large hungry dog.

there are pretty much two distinct schools of thought on this. one says shotgun, the other says handgun. With a shotty you are having to contend with a less maneuverable weapon, but with the handgun you have to worry about over penetration.

No Im not. Isnt it fact that most gun fights occur at less then 7 feet? Unless there was legions of North Koreans dropping from the sky I just dont see a huge blazing gun battle taking place.

To many scenarios...Probably little grounded in reality.

Buy a security system, get some bars on the windows, improved locks, buy a dog, get outside motion lights. Remove any large hedges or things obscuring windows...

If all that fails be damn sure of what is behind your target...

Not to mention with a shottie you can buttstock the perp in the face...

yeah but pistol wipping with blued steel is much more ###y :)

I would be more woried about a missed 12 gage rounds more than a 9mmjhp... unless hit in an artery/vital organ, wound from a 9mm has a good chance of being non fatal... wile the shotgun blast to the lower body would be NOT GOOD
