I am as big a firearms supporter as you will ever find, but my shooting has always been limited to non-live targets.

I understand that some people like to hunt for meat. I think many people can accept that including me.

Whether it is a North American or African trophy, killing the best of a species to collect a head.................This will bother more people than you think.

All these magazine covers showing a hunter and his dead trophy do more harm than good in portraying the firearms hobby.

This may come as a surprise to you but killing something simply “to collect a head” would bother many hunters as well. What you clearly don’t know, however, is that killing something to only collect a head is exceedingly rare....you judging others based on magazine covers is really no different than someone who knows nothing about guns judging gun owners based on the cover of Recoil Magazine.

My advice to you is the same as it would be to someone who only knows about guns because of what they see in the media or on magazine covers - educate yourself, spend some time learning about what you are talking about before beaking off about it. Your posts in this thread make it abundantly clear that you have no more than a shallow understanding of the issue being discussed.
 
The first mistake I see people make is using their own interpretation of trophy hunting. The second is not looking at the end game of the the anti trophy hunting crowd. They aren't anti trophy hunting. They are anti hunting. They will do anything in their power to stop any kind of hunting. They got their foot in the door with grizzly hunting and they wont stop pushing. I never had any desire to shoot a grizzly but I firmly believe we need to keep predators in check. Show em a video of a deer being eaten alive by dogs and one of a deer being harvested by a good clean shot and ask them what is more humane.

I actually read a very 'Period Piece' on Trophy hunting ( late '50's early '60's IIRC) by Robert Ruarck. The 'Really Big Trophy' animals are not in their prime was his logic. They were actually just past their prime. So 'Cecil the Lion?'... in the absence of human stewardship...the hyena's would have eaten him Alive...quite literally...and likely soon. There is no happy twilight years in the animal world.
Something 'really special' is an animal past their prime...they have reached the Apex and are on their way down.
Do you know how wild Canines take down an Herbivore? It is nightmare fuel.
So a really big Trophy animal? It might not be this year...but soon...the Wolves, Coyotes or Dogs will be dragging their insides out whilst they are still alive in the next year or so.
But continue... we can use a debate...well, not really. We are about past that point about 6-8 months back.
 
I’m a trophy hunter. My house has deer, moose, bears, goats, sheep ect. Made into taxidermy and on display. Some are big and some are not. The trophy on the wall is just a piece of the animal that didn’t go to waste after the meat was processed and the hunt was over. Really who’s business is it anyway? I would be willing to bet that I put far more effort and $$$ into my hunting and conservation initiatives than most people do with their hobbies. I wish that we were not under constant attack all the time about this. I read the comments on here and it’s no wonder we are in this situation. I have all of your backs when it comes to gun laws. Why don’t you have mine?
 
It's funny...I never really held with it.
After reading Ruarck's book... it made sense to a greater degree. Still a 'Spoon and Crockpot' guy for the most part...but I'm much more understanding of it... so it's a step in the right direction.

In nature.........animals kill to eat and survive.

Animals in nature do not kill for pleasure.

Do you want to apply the same logic to humans that are past their prime?

I realize it is an absurd argument and not exactly comparing apples to apples..........but you understand my point.

Let nature takes it's course........however brutal nature is..........it is nature.......

EXACTLY..............great advertising for shooting sports (sarcasm).

First attack the trophy crowd, this will be an easy one.

Then the hunters. This group better wake up as to what is coming.

The the target shooters. Already seem to know.

Pick away one by one.

Trophy hunters are few but they let the anti crowd get their "foot in the door".

Well said, this is how I look at it as well. I’m fine with hunting for trophies as well as for meat.

You sound like a couple good friends of mine do when they start in on something related to hunting, after I get done listening to their spiel I always say “Maybe you should actually experience it, you might actually have an idea of what it’s about.” One of them recently told me I shouldn’t be allowed to hunt with a 10rd mag in my rifle, he said “If you need more than 3 bullets than you’re a ####ty hunter.”

Bull$hit!

Ever lose a dozen head of cattle when a pack of wolves moves in and kill everything they can get their teeth into without eating more than a couple of mouthfuls?

Ever see a moose yard in the winter when the wolves get to them and slaughter every animal in the bunch and move on after eating a small fraction of the meat?

Ever see a weasel get into a henhouse and kill every bird in it without eating a single one?

How about a pod of dolphins who will attack and kill porpoises for no other reason than they want to?

How about a male bear who will kill without eating every cub it finds?

Nature is full of animals - humans included - who will at times kill other animals with no intent to eat them.
