Alrighty, first off, I didn't plan on posting this until I had a discussion with two other gun owners today and it startled me a bit.
It went as such (paraphrased) :
Me: So you hear that the liberals said that they want to ban military based semi autos?
Them: Yeah, so?
Me: You do realise what that means right?
Them: Who cares? They're all restricted anyways. Besides, you only need one shot to hunt.
Me: Do you honestly think that they are going to stop with that? Heck, 20 years ago you could, and many people did, hunt with restricteds and prohibs. They don't now because it was made against the law, not because they never did.
Them: They won't ban my rifle...
The moral of my story is this my friends; I know many people here are primarily hunters. Heck, I myself pretty much only own bolt actions, but I still am concerned about the mindset that I see so often, which is: This doesn't affect me, I'm safe, so let them do what they want.
I wasn't a gun owner during the last set of bans, but from everyone who was, it was that mindset that allowed those bans to happen!
For those of you who don't believe it, or are on the fence, read a bit into the wording of their ban:
They want to ban "all military assault weapons". From their actions, this can be applied to military derived guns as well. Think about just how many guns have common designs or origins in the military world.
They want to ban guns with "use of a large capacity magazine". How much of a step would it be for them to suggest that any gun capable of holding a "large" capacity magazine be banned. Just think - enfields, pump action shotguns, .22's and all manner of other guns would then suddenly be completely illegal.
Finally, what about this statement: "possessing military features such as:...threaded muzzle". That's right ladies and gentlemen, once they've banned "military assualt weapons" they can ban your interchangeable choke shotgun! Not only could a longer magazine tube be fitted to your deadly goose or duck gun, but it has a THREADED MUZZLE!
I know that many people in the firearms community may disagree with me, and I can respect that.
What I'm asking is for you to take a close look at the past and present state of gun control and prohibition in Canada, Britain, Jamaica, and the states and ask yourself: Do you really think they'll leave you alone in the end? Do you really think that they won't just turn the tables on you once they've divided us once?
Prove them wrong and defend our rights.
To the mods: I know similarly themed threads have been posted elsewhere, but I thought it would be appropriate here as well.
