I just watched HEAT..... for the fiftiest time... and it got me thinking.
You know when Val Kilmer was going medieval on police, he's shooting full auto pretty much the whole time. He was shooting AR shorty.

Now, how realistic was that scene, in terms of someone shooting an 10.5" M4 at that distance, and pretty much obliterating squad of police cars and officers?
I know it's a movie, but the scene was obviously put together with maximum realistic effect.

For anyone who shot AR F/A. or those who does for living, what do you say?

The M16 rifle was designed to be much more controllable in FA than any other weapon system of the time. This is because the stock is directly inline with the bolt and barrel, causing recoil to go straight back. I've never shot a FA M4, but I've read reports stating that the controllability is quite good.

I'm sure KevinB or the other operators could give a much better analysis.

Short bursts are easy to stay on target. Once you get into dumping whole mags, then it tends to drift up and off target. That being said, with alot of practice you can control a full auto AR.
We tend to fire in semi mode, as it is easier to control and you can engage just as fast as full auto. With practice of course.
Full auto is mainly used for suppression of the enemy. Which Kilmer was doing in this scene. Very effectively providing covering fire for DeNiro to get to cover and allow him to move off the X. Keeps thier heads down while you move closer or away from the target. It also keeps them focused on you so flanking elements can move in.
Anyway, enough of the tactics lecture.
As always, YMMV,

Great scene .. DeNiros guys look they look like 16" carbines :(

Pacinos FNC carbine is sweet :)

The dispersal of the rounds hitting on the squad cars is pretty realistic, entry holes for 5.56 not so much, but I thought the exit holes pretty close to spot on.
There is also no recoil, really appearant when kilmer is shooting longer (5-6 rounds) bursts, and bordering on outrageous when DeNero is helping Kilmer to the wagon in the grocery store parking lot and shooting one handed, full auto.
What do you do though, its the movies, still one of the best gun fighting scenes out there.

oh hell ya thats a great gun fight scene love it.i agree i thought his avatar was from fridays the 13th also.i now remeber that scene.good stuff think im going out to my in the back forty and do some blasting .

burst yes but as its been said dumping 20, 30rds on one target makes it hard to keep on target.
You have to remmber then when you pumped like that recoil onan m16 is not really a factor.
if you keep you busrts short you get allmost no climb.
Allso your 100% deaf after the 1st 5sec of gunfire

I suspect that the criminals would suffer more hits.
Car sheet metal provides zero protection from rifle rounds, a fact well demonstrated on an episode of Mythbusters.

If the cops are getting hit hiding behind the police cars, so would the criminals.
I agree though, it is an excellent sequence! And yes, they would probably all be deaf afterward!

Every time I watch that shootout scene, I always have to turn the TV surround sound way up until my house shakes and my wife getting all piss off at me.

The CAR-15 rocks.

ok, I haven't seen it in a while but aren't they wearing ear plugs as their running through the streets? I was pretty sure they had hearing protection.

Considering the only safe place in the middle of the street whilst facing FMJ 223/556 is behind the engine block of a car.......Yeah I would say it is an accurate depiction
