Heckler & Koch MR223A3 question

I ran an Elcan Spectre DR on mine and won the 500 yrd run down portion of the ORA SVC a few months a go, using AE Xm855 in a steel can.

The only non-factory part is the SEI G6 vortex that had replaced the factory muzzle device.

I only shoot HK these days in SVC. They are the most consistently precise guns with mass produced factory military ball ammunition.

I have to agree with Bartok5 and Greentips, you can’t go wrong with an ELCAN Spectre DR. I am running the 1.5/6X on my 14.5” MR223A3 and it is really fast to acquire targets and amazingly accurate.

Here it is, black on black.

I was looking at my MR223 and MR308 today and noticed something.

MR223:

MR308:

What we are looking at here is where the handguard retaining screw goes. The MR308 handguard looks very stream lined in that area where as the MR223 in the same area shows welding marks, like as if they just welded that piece on later.

Also, MR308:

MR223:

Here we are looking at the upper receiver. As you can see, on the MR308 upper, there are 2 rubber pads there to ensure a solid fit. Zero upper receiver wobble in my MR308 at all. The MR223 is missing that and has slight upper receiver wobble.

Now wondering why they didnt make the MR223 like the MR308

I don’t know how you rock such an big optic on an 11inch gun but it works. I was thinking to MRO was too big but damn the Elcan works on this. I have an RAL8000 gun, do you guys think an black surefire M600 would work or I need an FDE ?

It is a 14.5" gun, the (to me ) perfect compromise between length for ballistic performance, versus ergonomics/handling. The Elcan looks a bit large because It is the 1.5-6x, not the slightly smaller 1-4x Spectre.

Black or FDE is all about aesthetics and camouflage. While I like my firearms to look good as much as the next guy, I don't get too hung up on colour-matching accessories. A mix of Black and FDE components and accessories on a rifle will simply provide camouflage by helping to break up the overall shape. I wouldn't sweat the colour thing.

What benefit does the rail provide? Its not lighter, just different?

No, the Geisele Rail is no lighter than the OEM HK Handguard due to its longer length. What it does is provide more "rail estate" forward where needed by some shooters adhering to certain shooting disciplines. The Geissele Rail eliminates picatinny where it is not required, providing a very comfortable, narrow-contour gripping surface. It also covers more of the barrel, which can be a good thing during prolonged/sustained firing as it protects hands and equipment from the hot barrel. And finally, there is the aesthetic value - it just looks good to my eye....

And in the process Geissele "borrowed" the HK barrel nut/handguard design to put it on regular AR15. Interesting enough HK did not patent this, but they patterned another spring loaded system apparently.

HK must be crying a river for all the money they have lost from not having a patent over the HK416 hand guard / barrel nut coupling system.

Greentips and Bartok, is there any wobble between the upper and lower on your MR223s?

I wasnt too bothered by it at first, but if no one else is having this except for me, then I'm worried lol.

Tiker,

There is an almost imperceptible amount of play between my Upper and Lower Receivers. It is barely there, and I really have to push to get any movement between the Receiver halves. It is the most perfectly fitted AR that I have ever owned or used, period.

I applied 1 layer of masking tape to a small area on the bottom of the top reciever and its enough to remove the wobble. So yea, it isnt much, but definitely there.
