A friend and I went to the range and we had a I let your shoot mine if I can shoot yours day. Broke out mine, 22/250 Weatherby, 22 Marlin 39 A, Sage EBR M305 and a 75 Caliber Brown Bess.\

He broke out his a Marlin 45/70 26 inch barrel. He shortened it to 20 inches as he is a guide and needs a short barrel. When he handed me his rifle to try at the range, it was very light, then he broke out a cartridge. Wow huge, short but big. Now I am not too impressed with big bullets. I shoot a 338/378 Weatherby and a 375H&H. This rifle with a 300 gainer will stop anything on planet earth that walks, crawls, fly's or talks.

It was an immediate love affair, the 45/70 Marlin is da bomb. I WANT ONE.

Well... sarcasm aside, as intuitive as it may be, I also am a fan of the .45/70 cartridge, much less so the 1895... it jumps more cleanly off other platforms...

OK, OK... I may have shed a single, wistful tear also...

My 1895 SBL is my favorite gun. The best part is that I cast my own bullets for it too. $20 for a bucket of wheel weights, keeps me smiling for a while.

350 and 410 grain bullets equals good times

45-70 is one of my favorites for sure. I have a 1895GS and a 1895CB. Both shoot incredibly well with cast or jacketed, although the cowboy shoots a little bit better. I love anything that shoots a .458 bullet!

It is a fun cartridge and with the wide variety cast and jacketed load possibilities, a very versitile one as well. Here's the two I;) 'presently' have.

A Marlin GBL and a BFR.

Have tried Cabelas, WholeSale sports, and Bass Pro on the net and nobody has one listed on line. Anybody know where I can get a 1895 Cowboy 26 inch barrel 45/70gov?

You won't see Marlin producing these for a while. Still waiting on the 444's to come out. After some disastrous issues in QC the company has 'apparently' taken steps to ensure each rifle is inspected before leaving the plant. This after much needed changes in production line issues. The only place I have seen advertise the CB is Lebaron's and they don't have any in stock.

45-70 is a fun caliber to shoot, I own 4 of them. My current favourite is the Winchester 1886 I picked up when the came out on a special run a couple years ago, it was made by Miroku for Winchester, they do build beautiful rifles.

I have shot the Marlin 1895 Guide Gun in 45-70 and currently own a Marlin 1895 rifle The pistol grip stock on the rifle version helps control recoil better than the straight-stocked Guide gun. The longer barreled rifle also has noticeably less muzzle "flip" and while still a handful with full-power loads it is in my opinion is a very "shootable" firearm.

The Hornady 325 grain FTX at just over 2000 fps makes the 45-70 a bona-fide 225 -250 yard deer cartridge.

For stock ammo, I really like my 450Marlin (Browning BLR). Big bullet with 300WM power. However I don't want to hi jack the thread and start another 45/70 is better etc, etc, etc

How could you not be a believer? I have the Marlin SBL with a aimpoint T2 on it and a marlin GBL. Huge fun to shoot.
