Hi there.

I am hoping to begin shooting IPSC Production division next fall, and will be purchasing my first ever handgun.

I have narrowed it down to 3 models which are all in the same price range. All seem to be popular but I am having some difficulty making a decision because I have never fired a handgun before, and am not sure how the different features of each gun will affect it's performance in competition.

Below is a chart that I made up showing a side by side comparison of each:

So far I am leaning heavily toward the Shadow because of the higher magazine capacity (less changes=less time??), but I have always loved the 92, and I am quickly falling in love with those damn 1911's!

It's worthwhile noting that I intend to reload.

What I don't know is if/how shooting a 9mm will affect scoring (minor/major).

Any advice is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Steve.

Magazine capacity is a big plus in IPSC..They are all great guns..Personally I just picked up the shadow because it's a great out of the box IPSC gun..and it felt great in my hands witch is also important..As for how the different calibers will affect you in minor/major is unknown to me as I just bought my shadow last week and its my first gun that I plan to shoot IPSC with ..Good luck with the gun you choose....

For production all calibers are scored as minor. only if you move up to standard or open are they scored major/minor. You might get bumped up to a class that will score major and minor.
A consideration for production is that the first shot must be in double action. So with a exposed hammer gun you are required to place the "hammer down" before you start.
Depending on your level of confidance getting that hammer down can be easy or hard. My opinion is that this is just one more way of getting an accidental discharge and a disqualification.
If I was to by a new production gun it would have a decocker to allow for the safe dropping of the hammer. I believe the CZ SP01 Tacical is this way.

Go to the IPSC site, make sure the gun you are looking at falls on the approved production list and then run thru the rules or attend a local shoot and chat with the other shooters and get their opinions.

Umm...you've got a little mistake in there...The STI Spartan is not IPSC production approved. It's "SA" only (No DA) trigger.
Maybe you're thinking about the new STI GP-6?

The spartan is not allowed in the production division as it is a single action handgun.

Id say the shadow is your best bet into production as the trigger is far better than the berreta, and the shadow was designed especially for IPSC world class IPSC shooters.

If you are in Canada, then I don't understand your mag capacity claim. You are limited to 10 rounds legally, therefreo 14, 16 and 18 round hi-cap mags are useless to you. As long as you are not shooting .45 with an 8 or 9 rnd mag, then whatever you get shout be standard, CDN 10 rnd mag.

Playing in IPSC myself, the only recommendation I would give to a new shooter, is buy the gun that fits your hand like a glove. Two important things in IPSC are grip and draw, if neither are second nature to you with whatever gun you chose, you are dead in the water. Personally, I enjoy the SIG because they have a great feel to them.
good Luck!

Unless you have a Form 6 and want to shoot in the states. Many of us have mags that can be made high capacity and then changed back to pinned mags.

I'd take the SP-01 although the new STI does intrigue me if it's anything like my Edge.

OOPS...yes I see that now.

And the comment on mag capacity is well received (yes I am in Canada, Ontario specifically). I guess that is a question that I should have asked as well.

Are the any concessions made for sport shooters in Canada with regard to magazine capacity?

Thanks!

Steve.

I'm guessing that you've already considered a Glock and dismissed it. But there are a few very good points to make about them. One big one is, for a new IPSC shooter, they are VERY easy to learn how to shoot. With most other guns you have to engage the safety each and every time you holster the gun. Then draw, disengage the safety and shoot. With a Glock you don't have to worry about a safety. Just load and holster, draw and fire. Remember, if you load a gun and holster it without engaging the safety then you are disqualified. They're also a couple of hundred dollars cheaper too.

Go with the Shadow. It really has all you need for Production, a great trigger, excellent sights and a very good grip. The Tanfoglios are very nice but the triggers are a tad heavy out of the box.

I guess it depends on what you expect to do in IPSC and how competitive you are.

CZ75/85C are great guns as well and run well in IDPA if you have a notion to play both games.

I have also shot my M&P 9MM in Production. Great little gun but not as competitive in my hands as the Shadow.

Take Care

My first ever firearm purchase was a new Beretta 92FS. And all I can say is that I love it! FOR ME the ergonomics are perfect, but the best advice I can give is to try and handle one if possible.

As for reliability, I have yet to have a jam, failure to feed or failure to extract, and I have put thousands of rounds through her.

As a content Beretta owner, I'd have to put my vote on that. Also, you can get a .22 conversion kit for it (which I ended up getting. It is just a different frame/slide), and practice using .22LR rounds (which are infinitely cheaper than 9mm) on the same grip (helps learn good trigger control and techniques).

For my money, I'd go with the Beretta.

Wow - so many great responses.

Keep 'em coming.

I have looked at the glocks but I am not fussy on them.

I hadn't considered the GP6, but will look at it as well.

Steve.

Ok, I am officially throwing the GP6 into the ring.

I understand that Sean at Freedom Ventures has them on order?

When are they expected to arrive?

Or - if they have arrived, can anyone comment on their suitability for IPSC?

Thanks,

Steve.

The origional gun is great, so I can't imagine the STI model will be any less refined.

I've got the old model and will be getting the new model if you're local.

What range do you shoot at Nero?

I am certain that we can get you a test drive at a local one to find out what works for you.

Oh Merc. I remember a while back we had a young buck join here and said he wanted to shoot IPSC with a DE as it was the gun he used in Counterstrike.
Is that you?!!

LOL

LOL. No that's not me. I have played CS, and shot the "Deagle". I just wish that IPSC used the actual power factor to calculate the scores instead of whether or not you make minor/major. The power factor on my DE is 458.4. Minor is:125 Major is:170. :runaway:
