Help! Cleaning rod got stuck

Holy Sweet Jesus. Im at a complete loss for words.

This thread should go down as a classic of CGN.

Inquiring minds would like to know what ammo you were using to lead up a barrel that badly. I don`t clean my 10-22 barrel very often, with no leading problems.

the winchester white box also does a number on the barrel. had the same thing happen myself. you must have many mags i bet. mine gives me a hint when the bullets start keyholing on target.

CGN should start a "Believe it or not" section for odd occurances like this. I vote this story be first on the list.

Like others on here, "WOW"

Well this is why I'm a firm believer in cleaning your rifle after EVERY time out!!!! I'm a perfectionist, and I clean my firearms after every use.

Think about it.... if you want your rifle to perform at it's best, it MUST be clean!

The Military doesn't let their firearms go without proper cleanings!

Just my 2cents....

I must say though.... totally amazing... and I'll never buy wildcats, or thunderbolts!!!

Ask some target shooters if they go into a match with a clean bore or not. I shoot mine until function or accuracy degrade, then clean them. Usually I get bored before that happens and clean them, but it is never with less than 500+ rounds through first. Often it is over 1000 rounds.

I think that far more bores have been worn out and/or damaged by cleaning too much than by shooting.

Just thought I'd update you on my situation. I spent the better part of this evening de-leading the rest of the barrel; I think I've saved it but my next range trip will determine if I've ruined the rifling. I managed to carefully remove a small piece of lead that was not crushed by the cleaning rod; from my measurements my .22 cal barrel was reduced to approx .20 cal because of the lead. Will post the picture tomorrow.

Wheeler - I do clean my gun after every range session. However, I don't anticipate having to clean the gun while I'm at the range. Also, I am in no way trying to dissuade anyone from using/buying thunderbolts or wildcats, they work fine and dandy but you'll need to check for leading more often.

I have used tons of thunderbolts (garbage) in both my 10/22 and 597 , and have never seen such lead fouling before. If you really cleaned that after every range sesion, then damn, im at aloss for words. Elbow grease, wire brush and solvent should git er done though, that $29 barrel sounds like a great deal too.

They make bore snakes for a reason and at $20 you can pull it through the barrel every 2-300 rounds so you don't get into this situation again. Probably a good idea to clean it with a snake at every ammo change.

That's interesting...I have nothing but disdain for Thunderbolts but, in 20 years of shooting Winchester Wildcats, I never had a problem...Never any excessive leading issues.....
