Help healing my sick M39’s scope

Hey folks, not sure whether to post this here or in the optics section so....here it is.

I’ve got a beautiful VKT M39 with a captured Russian PEM scope. For a while there I was getting groups the size of Ontario, and I figured the barrel must have just been shot out. Then the lightbulb came on in my brain and I tried the iron sights...what do you know...1.5 inch groups suddenly emerge from the muzzle.

So, it would appear that the crosshairs of the PEM scope shift with every shot. What’s more, the reticle goes slightly out of focus, suggesting the lenses are no longer glued in place in there. Is there anyone on here who knows where I can get this scope repaired? I’ve heard of a gentleman who fixes No 32 scopes, but can’t seem to find anyone who works on the Russian stuff.

Trace Scope Repair might give it a shot, give them a shout.

It’s an original Russian side mount. And yes, it’s SA stamped and re-numbered to the rifle. Not a true SOV rifle, but more likely a product of the Finnish military begging soldiers to turn in their captured scopes (they really didn’t want to) to build much needed sniper rifles

Thanks guys, she’s kind of my grail gun. I’ve been searching for one for years. Still can’t touch the No4 T for accuracy, but she’s definitely more collectible. Now if I can just get that damn scope working....

Interesting rifle! Thanks for the pics.

It's not often you see an actual Finn sniper. Very cool.

Except that it's humped :(

That exact rifle was discussed at length on gunboards. Someone faked it up and it doesn't match known examples of how SOV rifles were made or marked.

Sorry op. Hopefully you paid a repro price.

I’d like to see a link to that if I could.

I understand it’s not an SOV rifle, however I’m quite sure the mounting was done by the Finns. I would certainly like to see the facts though.

Damn,..nice rifle...the serial number on the mount matches the rifle ?...

Yup, the original Russian serial has been crossed out and the current M39 serial is marked on it. I guess the gentleman above is claiming it’s fake, but I am very sure that the scope and mount are original. (This is my fourth such scope) kicking myself for selling the others since they might have been good donors for this current one.

Real scope, fake mount, SA stamp, bolt, mounting, stock relief and mount serial number.

It's a nice elooking rifle, but that mount was never in Finland, let alone installed there. Sorry.

Don't take my word for it, go post it again on gunboards with detailed pics of the mount, markings, the stock relief cut and the bolt handle.

I sent this thread to the gent who fixes scopes in Ontario. He said he'd get in touch.

Honestly OP, I was thinking it was too good to be true, given the rifle’s condition and the PEM mount it looks suspect....I have never seen one as far as fakes go but they could exist...Finn sniper rifles are very ,very rare..

I’m definitely not trying to pass it off as an SOV sniper, even the stock is a post war arsenal replacement. But it’s a fine rifle, and I’d buy it again any day. What makes you suspect the mount? It looks like typical Russian machining work to me, and it’s definitely not like modern reproductions that I’ve seen.

I agree with what Claven2 said. Im surprised someone would even bother to fake the mount, but there you have it.

They sell for big money, so I'm not surprised at all. Faked Finns are rarer than faked k98's, for now, but as values climb, the faking will accelerate.
