Help me chose my GF’s first hunting rifle

My wife has a CZ 527 in 7.62x39. She loves it. We put a Burris Veracity 2-10 on it. She didn't like the length of pull so we got a youth stock put on it, and threaded the barrel for reduced recoil. Excellent little rig for her

OK, so while we're sorta still on topic, my daughter just did her PAL and hunter safety.
I'm really proud of her because she scored perfect on both.
Her hubby paid for them, so I'm thinking of getting her something that's suitable for northern Ontario moose and black bear.
Hubby says .270 win. I tend to agree.
Cabelas has nice entry level offerings from savage and Remington with scopes on them.
Anyone have a good recommendation for a good starter for a light framed gal in .270?

What's her experience level with guns? 270 has a decent amount of recoil, pretty much the same as a 308. It might be a bit stout if she's new to the game. A 6.5x55, or 260rem would be a good choice for a low recoil moose gun. If she can handle the recoil then 270 is a fine choice!

Exactly this.

Fit and weight are the most important aspects, and the cartridge should be something manageable in that platform.

Eg. A Howa in 7mm-08 or a Tikka T3 in 6.5x55, etc. are al light and handy, but their handling might be off for the person in question.

Settle on several calibres that she can shoot without gaining a flinch, and try the various platforms.

Cheers!

You should really be letting her choose what fits her the best.

I had a Winchester 70 Featherweight .270 at one point, very nice rifle. My wife shot it a few times, and didn't have too much issue with recoil.
I found my T3 Lite .308 kicked worse than the Featherweight.

I situational questions such as this post and many others that I recall the first and perhaps the most important suggestion might be . . .

SENT PICTURES OF GIRL FRIEND or WIFE or DAUGHTER or SON OR WHOEVER!

Since girlfriends range from "full size" to "sub compact" it's hard to recommend a particular make or model. But given that she doesn't take much recoil I would recommend something like a Ruger M77 with a 20"-ish barrel in 7mmx57. It's a great round that kills extremely well with a huge selection of bullets to cover any hunting situation. Plus it's a classic.

I did a Tikka t3 lite for my wife in 260 REM. I found a used walnut stock and put it on. glass bedded and had the barrel shortened to 18.5 and a 1" minibrake installed (get the thread cap at the same time). its short, lite and she loves it. I put a 1-4 vortex pst that I had in the safe on it, but anything with a bell 40 mm or less will be good, and a low end magnification of 3 or less. buy a nice sling too.

Hello there.

So the GF wants to come hunting with me this year (deer, maybe moose).

We are undecided. She’s not a big lady, and the most she can bear, recoil-wise, is my Sako A7 in .270. Ideally, I’d buy her the exact same gun, but I don’t think we’ll be able to save $1700 until November, when the season opens.

So what say you?

Our requirements are:

1) No brands with recent history of QC issues (Remington, Savage etc);

2) Under $1300, including modest glass;

3) Calibers between 7.69x39 and .270 (including 30-30, .243, 7mm08, .308 etc);

4) Lighter is better.

So far I’ve found the CZ 527 and some Tikka T3s (so many models I can’t even begin listing).

Does anything else fit the bill?

Thanks in advance,

Steyn

Tikka T3 SS Lite in 7-08 would be PERFECT ! RJ
