Help me chose...Three gun match black rifle..

For what it's worth, there might be further reaching "idealistic" reasons for allowing the use of 10 rnd AR/Beretta mags. I would argue that it shows that sport shooters can be "trusted" to safely use "high"(er) capacity mags without all babies and puppies in a 5 mile radius dying a horrible graphic death. If we limit OURSELVES to 5 rnd mags, we are in effect saying "they" are correct and that we only "need" low rnd mags.

In my perfect world, I'd have a 75 round drum in an AK and a 31 rounder in my Glock for a match.

I see your logic. However, any restriction on an individuals freedom is unacceptable. The thought that as a law abiding citizen I must "prove" my capabilities prior to enjoying a freedom makes me sick. If proof of competency was required by all citizens and governments, there would be a whole lot of folks out of work in a nation without a government.

Restricting magazine capacity goes against IPSC's founding principles.

I don't think we want to go down that road.

I'm not sure where the proving of capabilities to enjoy a freedom comes in my rant. What I'm saying is: ideally the match in question should allow the maximum legal capacities. Otherwise, why continue to push the limits of our strange magazine laws? I understand the desire of the match organizer to keep the playing field level and try to make everyone have fun. But if one person with a 6 shot revolver or a 1911 with 7 round mags shows up, does that mean I should only be allowed to load that amount in my 10 round mags? If I'm using iron sights on my SKS, does that mean it's only fair if everyone else turns off their Red-dots/Eotechs? Someone runs a double-barrel coach-gun and now I should plug my 8 shot Mossburg Persuader? What's a level playing field then?

My last 3-gun match had these rules for the firearms:

Rifle had to be semi-auto centrefire and classes were split into Light and Heavy for intermediate and full-power cartridges. You could run any kind of pistol or shotgun you wanted. That's it, that's all. Pretty wide open.

Whoever does all the legwork for the shoot should be appreciated for the time and effort and not criticized for whatever rules they put in place. They're not doing it to be dicks, but trying their best to run a good event. If it's a sanctioned event, obviously rules will follow in line with the sanctioning body. That's why I'd never run an IDPA 3-gun. The rules are very restrictive.

Type 97?

You mentioned the "idealistic" reasons for using 10 round AR mags and the such as a show of competency for the government. What I'm saying is, I could care less what the government says regarding mag capacities. Unfortunately your logic is quite sound. At the end of the day it couldn't hurt our case to run the max capacity at all times to illustrate just how retarded magazine restrictions really are.

As for the rest of your post, you're dead on. The playing field is leveled from the word go. Everyone has the option of running the same gear as anyone else. Yes, it comes down to financial variances. Thems the breaks, deal with it. For those who wish to compete for kicks and possibly take home some wood, it doesn't much matter what they run. For the serious competitor, the cost of gear is of little concern.

Stevo,

No one is trash talking the match director. Imposing ignorant rules that are blatantly designed to handicap the intelligent shooters who wish to maximize their setup wreaks of "fair play" or "everyone's a winner" mentality. The goal is to enjoy the shoot. On the side some take it quite seriously and enjoy the bragging rights when they win. If others can't handle losing then don't play.
