Hi all,

Thinking of buying a new pistol and hesitating. I would like your thoughts. I already own a 9mm (CZ shadowline) and am very tempted by the Beretta 92FS or a Sig P226. But then I say to myself I should get a .45 acp (Sig 1911 or Smith and Wesson 1911 e series) to have a new experience. Then I think about ammo price and say to myself that 9mm is more reasonable. So is a .45 a worthy experience enough.

Thanks for your thoughts

Have you actually handled/shot the Beretta & Sig 9mm pistols? I've owned Beretta's before but always found them & the Sig series double stack 9mm's too bulky in the grip for me. While the Browning Hi-Power & CZ 75/85 series perfect fits for my liking. And I've shot a lot of 9mm over the years.

On the 1911.... I've easily owned > 100 different ones in a well over 30 yr love affair with that platform. Still have a few. See if you can shoot one before you decide to make the plunge. I'm betting you will find the 1911 / .45ACP "worthwhile" after you try it, though. ;)

Are you planning on keeping the CZ? If you are, definitely get a .45. You can always just shoot it less often than the 9mm, at least until you get into reloading.

what he said!

Yes I know .45 ammo is expensive and as I don't intend to get into reloading, that's an issue. I guess if I get a .45 I will have to limit myself to about 50 rounds every range trip but I bring a .22 for fun along most of the time. As for handling Sig P226 and Beretta 92FS, yes I have. True that they are bulkier than my CZ but it is not uncomfy for me. I must admit that 1911's fit good in the hand though.

Thanks for your opinions

I can only speak on behalf of the Beretta so I'll just give you my two cents. The platform is starting to show it's age, but the 92/96A1 are worthy current versions of the 92 with updated specs(internal recoil buffer, captured guiderod, beefier slide). It is big and a bit heavy so it's definitely not for everyone. Personally though, I like the girth and sense of indestructability that all-steel gives you. It may not have as great of out of the box accuracy as some of todays current handguns, but it's still pretty good. Some people complain about the trigger, but that can be negated by either parts or simple practice... Just ask Ernest Langdon. One of the selling points for me was the fact that the Beretta 92 is probably the most reliable handgun/ 9mm ever made. I also really liked the fact that there is a very large aftermarket supply of parts and upgrades for the platform. The fit and finish of a Beretta is also second to none. All in all, it's the kind of pistol that at the very least is never going to disapoint you.

I'm currently building on a 92A1 myself, not because it needed the upgrades, but because I simply chose it to be the first firearm that I've totally modded out myself. I've got a couple of parts put in(Ric Gandy SGS Compensator), waiting to be put in(D-spring, Skeletonized Hammer, Ext. Mag release) or still needing to be ordered(EFK FD barrel, Allegheny SBT trigger, being the next). But once this bad boy is done, I would honestly put it up against ANY other 9mm around.

Definitely get a .45!!!! Don't even think twice! True, ammo is way more expensive to shoot if you don't reload your own BUT there is no better feeling than the recoil on a .45!! It is truly orgasmic when compared to a 9mm! Shoot one and you will know what I mean.
A compromise you can make if you still can't decide is get a SIG P220 in .45. You satisfy your P226 craving but in .45.
Shoot your 9mm more and bring the .45 out for the days you need that special something! LOL!!
A 1911 platform is a classic but the features are fairly similar to a CZ ( feel, safety operation, pointability etc.) so the P220 gives you experience in a different handling package. Just my $.02. Good dilemma to have!

You can't go wrong with a .45 & the e-series! Love mine! 9mm is great & enjoy shooting my 9mm m&p but doesn't compare to the 1911

If you want the Beretta get one. Love mine! Nothing wrong with staying with 9mm either. I did have a SIG1911 and it was a very nice gun too tho.

For about $700 you could probably pick up a Norc 1911 in 45 and a Norc NP22 or NP34 used shipped to your door. For a bit over $800 you could get them new from SFRC or another supplier. I have a few and they all work fine. I bought the NP34 used for $325 shipped to my door thinking I would refinish it over the winter but was kind of disappointed as the finish was very good. I see no place I could improve it. My 1911s could use a little de-horning but they all work fine.

I reload a lot and use Campro plated bullets in 9mm and cast my own 45 lead rounds so it's really affordable.

Given your post, and assuming you only have the 9mm already...
My suggestion is a different caliber.

This could as easily be .22 vs .45
Maybe a .357 revolver and then you get .38 too!

But yeah, if it was me I would switch it up along those lines.

For me 45's mean 1911's. As far as the "45 experience", there really is not much of one for me. The 45 is not much more of a kicker especially in comparison to 357. I have a brood of 45's ( All 1911's... and a SAA 45colt ) but I find that shooting 9mm is far more cost effective. I never felt that 45acp kicked much more or gave me an additional thrill. This is not an opinion of stopping power.
