Help me figure out this M14/M1A addiction...

So, I wanna build a solid truck gun that will accompany me daily. The M14 was my first thought being as it's so reliable and bulletproof. You'll have to bare with me because this M14 thing is out of my realm of expertise. I'm more of an AR and bolt gun whore.

So I've decided I want the shorty version (18.5) with some kind of forward top rail. Heres my questions...

1. Is there any other top quad rails available? OR am I stuck with the UTG version?

2. Is there any other brands in between the Norinco & Springfield Armory?

3. Is there any standard stocks out there that have the same quality as the Springfield ones?

Ultimak makes the best one of those IMHO

I was thinking maybe of one of these with a Vortex Sparc or Bushnell TRS 25 but I want to be able to cowitness my iron sights and i am not sure if this combination will work .

2. Is there any other brands in between the Norinco & Springfield Armory?

Another Brand the virtually the same as a Norinco is Polytech Bell enterprizes I have 2 if them and 1 Norinco.

A company in the U.S (LRB) makes very nice receivers $$ and I am 100 % sure they dont export them , as I tried getting sights and they wont sell me those either .




Is there any standard stocks out there that have the same quality as the Springfield ones?

Boyds makes some really nice wood stocks for these.

I've been carrying one of my M14's daily for a couple of years and it has a UTG tri-rail on it. I have banged and beaten that old girl and that rail has held up to it, just as the polytech synthetic stock I put on it has. The gun has accounted for numerous coyotes and a couple of deer.

I don't think I want an optic right now, but I do have a SPARC I will throw on from time to time.

Do you know who sells these Ultimak rails?



As far as the stock goes, I want to keep the standard synthetic stock until I can track down a Springfield Armory stock. Is there a specific M14 model I should buy to accommodate that stock? Poly, Norc, ??? Are the actions any different?

And finally is there any other quality stock out there that will look like the Springfield ones? ie black, textured, quality... ???
 
I got my UTG off the EE, and then got the charger guide rail from fabsports. My truck rifle is a norc that came with the chuwood stock and I picked up a polytech stock from a guy locally and have no issues with it what so ever. I had to relieve a little around the front ferrule but that was it. It fits nice and tight and has definitely stood up to the test. I've also got a norc with a factory synthetic stock and haven't seen the need to change it out yet either, as much as I am looking for an excuse to try out different one of the archangel ones. Buy one and try it out before you start making alot of changes to it, you might like it just the way it is.

I picked up the m8 rail from m14doc on this forum.
 
I got my Ultimak from Brownells; they had no problem with it as it's just a mount and completely exempt from any export controls. Same with the Boyd's stock as it was $89.
 
I went to Brownells but couldnt find it , they had only one type showing and it was for an AK-47...do you have a link or a price for it ?

Wow I just totally folded like I cheap wal-mart tent and pumped the credit card hard....

I just bought the M305 Shorty, Ultimak M8 Rail, M14 Recoil Pad, Vickers Combat Sling and some Black Magpuls for the mags....

I feel so dirty I've never bought anything Chinese before, all my guns are higher end made in NA guns. I would've pulled the trigger on a SA M1A but the idea of keeping a $2500 gun in my truck is too hard. It's alot easier on the mind to keep a $700 gun inside all tucked away. Never the less the new truck gun is on route...

Now some more questions...

Should I keep my expectations super low for this new unit? Is the fit and finish pretty lousy or is it actually nice looking? I know the rail will look good, hell for 200 bucks it better. If it does look cheap hopefully the rail will class it up a bit. I'm still holding out for a SA stock though, hopefully I can get one soon and really purdy this thing up...
 
Thanks for the link F55 , I looked on the site 3 times and couldnt find it...even with their search feature as it showed only the ak47 version.

So I ordered the Ultimak rail , after seeing your pics it convinced me ..
