Help Me Find the Perfect General Purpose 308 for Me

XS rail on Ruger Scout rifle gives aperture sight at rear plus LPVO. You could probably hang some sort of offset flashlight off the front of the rail for added tacticool. :)

Perfection!

Look for the next best alternative, a short action CZ 557 Lux. Buy a 10-round mag for it and as a bonus, you get a nice Turkish walnut stock. They are around if you search hard enough. I dropped mine into an OEM "Night sky" synthetic stock.

Another option is a Ruger M77 Gunsigjht Scout or a conventional M77 Compact with irons.
the 557 is a beautiful gun. when you say 10 round magazine are you referring to the 557 Ranger model? I thought the standard Lux had a floorplate magazine?

To the original topic, I just got a ruger scout because I wanted the same criteria as the OP stated, and I love it. A bit pricey now but I am in love with it. about $80- 100 for MDT metal mags, and around $60 for a magpul AICS pmag. Also, Bullseye north has 15% off ruger right now. Saw the scout for $1500ish

You might want to consider blind magazines or floor plates and scrap the detachable magazine requirement.

There's no real advantage to a detachable mag.

A sight convenience at best.
Lots of advantages to a box mag, personally I dislike blind mags. Floor plate is acceptable if it holds 5 rounds, otherwise it can collect dust in a box.
do we really need iron sights on a modern bolt action
Yes, I still look for irons whenever possible.

Same for me regarding mags.

My dad used to tell me that detachable mags are easy to lose when you're hunting. I was hunting with my LE No.5. I get back to my truck, lower the tailgate for lunch, take the mag out and clear the chamber. After lunch I drove to another clearcut, get out put my pack on, grab the JC and voila, no mag.....

I drive 20 minutes back to my previous clearcut and my mag is lying in the gravel by the side of the FSR......

I eventually told the old man about it and he just gave me "the look".......

I have irons on every rifle I own except for my Dlask Tuf22.

Those without QD rings I tape an Allen key or other small tool to remove the rings in a pinch.

I've never had to but just as I've never had to use the fire extinguishers in my trucks, UTV and boat, I still keep one there.

The only rifles I’d not care about having irons on would be some flavour of magnum cartridge, though it’s not hard to find an older Rem 700 in 7rem mag with irons or some other classic hunting rifle. I love a nice blued rifle with a walnut stock and irons.

If it wasn’t equipped with them I’ll be running some type of 2-7 2-9 power scope and would be fine shooting closer in at the lower power mag anyway, I’ll always pick the rifle with irons if I have two to pick from and one has them.

The 557 Lux came in a standard floorplate model (long action) and I have one of those too (8x57), but also in a short action with a 5-round detachable magazine (308 and 243 only). The 243 SA Lux is very rare as it was only made for 3 years (2018-2020). Apparently, the short action Lux also came with the standard floorplate too, but I haven't seen one.

I had a 557 eclipse in .308. Irons were great, rifle was far too heavy for my application and the aftermarket parts were very difficult to come by, IF anyone made them.
The Eclipse was their entry model and very decent. My short action Lux with 20" barrel is more of a middle weight. I have a PGW pic rail and an NECG peep site, and a spare OEM synthetic stock as the Turkish walnut is way too nice to bang up. I really like mine as it fits me well and its just as accurate as any of my T3's. I have lighter rifles too, but all fill a purpose. As an aside, I have really grown fond of 243.

Personally remington model 7 seems like a good choice. Why would you want 10 round mags for hunting? Just doesn't compute for me. In my experience if you're not into meat in 2 rounds 10 ain't gonna matter. Plus you run into problems with one hand carry with big clunky Mags that hold way more rounds than you need for Hunting. My 2 cents

I’ve got a Parker hale 3006 now that I much prefer over that cz. I actually sold all of my 557/527/455. Only one I regret selling was the 455.

I plan on getting a plastic t3x stainless .243 sooner or later. I have an LSA 55 in .243 and it’s a friggin great rifle but it’s too pretty to pack around.

I went through this debate myself a few years ago myself. I gave up the mag option and just bought a plain jane savage axis in 308, took it ti my smith and had him put irons on it, gave the bolt a good buffing on the wheel, lightened up the trigger to 3.5 lbs..done. No problems or issues, and it puts meat in the freezer.
