Well my buddy has recently decided on getting his hunting license, he will be taking his hunters/firearms safety course in a few weeks and seeing as lately he has helped me through some tough emotional times I have an urge to buy him a "graduation" gift, through some subtle questioning on the part of his GF for me I figured out he wants a 22,unfortunately I don't know what type so I guess I have to let my own instincts tell me that seeing as I will be hunting with him often I don't really think a semi would be a good choice,I figure a Bolt with either a tube mag or a detachable box magazine with a low power scope would be perfect. I have a rather limited budget for this of about 175-200 bucks so I was thinking a cooey 60-600 or a lakefield savage mark whatever they are( :D) but I'm sure you guys have some better ideas,as long as it is accurate(who likes to start shooting with a inaccurate rifle?) and has dovetails for a scope, that brings me to my next question, what scope can be had for that kinda budget that wont fall apart within a few years? does not have to have high magnification simply be solid and dependable. Any suggestions welcomed and appreciated.
Thanks,
Hunter.

Can't go wrong with a Savage Mark II. I won't chime in on the scope as I have a Tasco on mine and will probably get flack for it, even though it's perfect for my needs. Also don't think you will fit a scope into your budget as I doubt you could pick up a new rifle for that price let alone buy glass for it. Even the package gun/scope combos will run over budget. You might be better finding something used and go from there. Maybe pick him up the rifle and let him glass it himself.

I have my granfathers cooey 60. Needs a rear sight height adjuster but shhots well. Clean good fun for a newbie. Simple to take apart and clean.
P&d are great and the the scope mounts.
Anything under $150 is a fair price but check the bolt, extractor and firing pin.

oh yes I forgot to mention I am looking at used mostly, not afraid of guns that need refinishing as I rather enjoy that kind of work,I have though about marlin 60's and the like but have reservations about a totally new shooter with a semiauto

Yes, some jump the gun and don't read! Easier to talk then listen sometimes.
A bolt gun will get you more distance and tighter groups for less money.
Marlins are great. I love my savage btvs. You should youtube btvs long range shooting.
However way past your budget.
If your friend is cheap, going 22lr instead of 17hmr or 22wmr will save him some coin.
Maybe someone could chime in, do marlins or savages take shorts/longs and longrifles?
I know a cooey does! They really don't make them like they use too.

lol yes airwolf I agree on the cooey 600 or 60,it always feels good to breath new life into those awesome little guns, I seem to remember people talking about how the model 60's seemed to be more accurate? not sure of that someone please correct me if I am wrong, I had model 600 when I was younger and it was very accurate but very inconsistent,it seemed it was always changing zero although in retrospect that may have been the well used *cough cough "golden antler" scope that sat upon it :p
Thanks,
Hunter.

Definitely a bolt action .22 to start with. much safer for a newbie. and tends to make the shooter take thier time and be more accurate in placement. There are many older bolts for sale in the EEs. Even using a peep sight equiped rifle would please him. and a 3x9x scope is plenty to about 100 yards.

I have lots of .22 rifles, but the ones that go out with me most often are my Ruger 10/22 semi auto and my Savage Mk.II boltie.

Both are a heck of a lot of fun - the Ruger (currently in a Marauder kit, with a Red Dot) is the most fun for blasting away, and the Savage for tack-driver accurate shooting.

The Savage is likely the one that will fit your budget best - for that price you can buy brand new, with a scope fitted. I got mine for $189, including a mounted Bushnell 3-9 X 50 scope, brand new from a Canadian retailer. You'd be hard pressed to find even a used Ruger 10/22 for that little, I suspect.

well Had picked out a MK.II at the local gunshop but then talked to him one last time before trading my model 94 30-30 for it and he now is talking all about a 12 gauge.......*sigh this is supposed to be a surprise present for him so now I'm looking at a H&R pardner pump, wrong section I know but anybody have anything to say about em?

mk II was a good choice. you can still get it and let him pay for the shotgun....wrong section but, get an 870 wingmaster $200-300. cheap but has a potential. Cant go wrong or an express $300-400. good all around gun to start with. I got both love em. No experience with H&R except old guns and single shots. 870 has proven itself.
