USMC zero m16 rifles at 36yds in the field and gives a point blank range of 300 yds with zeros at 36 and 200 yds.
just curious.. what do you mean by "point blank range of 300 yards"?? according to the tables, at 300 yards that bullet is about 8" low... (the 36, and 200 line up BTW)
So much bubba info here it's not even funny. If you zero an AR for 100 yards, you'll hit spot on at 100 yards and nothing else before or after that. Your elevation clicks will be way out of whack with the numbers they are marked with.
First we gotta start talking in METERS.
The standard battle sight zero is 25
METERS on the Z setting of a milspec
carry handle AR. This will give you point of impact on point of aim at 25 meters at the Z setting and 300 meters on the 3/6 mark of the elevation knob.
The cross over for .223 out of a 20" full size AR is at 36 meters and 300m, since 36 meters is a pretty random point they invented the Z (Zero) setting on the carry handle sight which simulates 36 meters but allows you to zero at 25 meters (the average small handgun range).
Remember to do everything in
meters, the sight is military and everything military is in meters, zero at 25 yards and you will be off.
You said you have a 40 meter range, get the target a tad closer to 36 meters and flip the elevation knob to it's lowest setting 3/6 (300/600m setting) and fire until you can get a consistent toonie sized group. You are now zeroed for 300m, everything between 36 meters and 300m will be high so you need to hold under, at 300m you are POA POI, after that you need to do hold overs.
If you can get to 25 meters, same deal except you set it to Z when you zero then you go back to 3/6 when done. Same result.
