I just bought an older Sako, it's a Sako AV in 7MM Rem Mag serial # 8157xx.
As i understand with Sakos which is not much the AV stands for long action, now i have tried to google what model this rifle is and year of manufacture and this is what comes up.
Sako AV serial # 8157xx site:Sakocollector.com did not match any documents.
Does anybody know what model and year this rifle was made.
Thanks.

Same as my AV (model L461?), manufactured in the early 1990's.

They are a higher quality rifle than the new ones IMHO. I have several in that series from the L61R up to several A Vs and a couple A IVs and an A III. These were made in both long and short actions and a couple or 3 different configurations as to embellishments. I know the AVs came in a standard "hunter model", a deluxe model with skipline checkering, lighter better figured walnut and a little painting on the floorplate, they also came in a full stocked carbine and possibly more. These are all 2 lug action rifles unlike the newer models which are all 3 lug (I believe). You will note that your 7 Mag should hold 4 under.......1 more than normal for a magnum cartridge magazine.
I'm not an expert on them by any means but I have owned (and do own) a whack of them over the years.

Pics would help determine which variation it is.

If i read this correctly it's an L579 made in 1992.
And if this is true how does this rifle compare to the new Sakos quality wise?
The bolt on this rifle is very smooth and the trigger very light and crisp.

Remember the kids song that went "Anything you can do, I can do better"? That's that AV compared to current Sako offerings.

The 85's are very fine well made rifles too. I have 3 of them including this 30-06 Bavarian Carbine.

I can text them to you or email them but that is all i can do.

Very nice. And heavy. I had one in 270 win.
Had nice irons on it too.

Like i said don't know much about Sakos but my first impression is good just from cycling the bolt, trigger pull, and overall finnish.
Guess my next step will be preparing some brass load some ammo and see what she likes, hopefully she won't be too picky.......thinking 160gr accubonds or 160gr Partitions.

Yep, that's an A V hunter laminate.........

Either bullet is a perfect choice for the 7 Mag. I got excellent accuracy and top velocities with the 160 Part and IMR 7828 in W-W brass and CCI 250s..........Accubonds weren't invented yet, but I have been using them, of late, in my 7 RUM and they are an outstanding game slayer. RL 25 might also be a super powder for the 7 RM, it's works amazing in both my 257 and 300 Wbys, so it might be a winner in the big 7.

Don't have any RL25 but got plenty 7828 i will give it a shot hopefully she likes likes the IMR, if not then i will get some RL and see how it goes.
Partitions are partitions but i also like the accubonds a lot, killed a couple Moose with them 180gr .30 cal and was impressed with the way they went down.
