Just came back from moose hunting on the coast in Northern manitoba, my buddy who took me put in a herculean effort hauling it out amongst other things,and want to buy him a top quality hunting knife.needs to be tough and hold a sharp edge. Don't really need the gut hook.what you recommend, thanks.

What's your budget? You can get some decent knives starting around 100 and go way up from there. On the lower end I would recommend Ruike Jaeger in 14C28N or something from Joker Knives in N695. Benchmade makes some decent priced knives slightly higher priced than those. If you're looking for something around 200 I think Lion Steel makes some really nice stuff for the price with quality steel.
Look at Lion Steel or Benchmade. I mean there's a thousand knives out there at that price point that will do the job but I don't think you'd go wrong with those 2 brands. Another thing to consider is if your buddy has equipment and such to deal with "super steels". As you go up in price you typically get better edge retention and toughness but the trade off is often harder to sharpen. Just something to consider. Most steels in that price range should be fairly easy to sharpen tho.

Check out Grohmann Knives. A Canadian company with a long history of knife making. I own a lot of knives but the #100 large skinner is one of my favorites. Holds an edge well and is a good design.

That's a good idea. They seem to be decent knives but somehow none of the designs really speak to me so I haven't bought one.

I will attest to the Grohman knives being good quality. Being a bit cheap I get their seconds. I have never had one fail/break/go dull in the middle of the job.
I love the #3. It can get into most any part of the animal you need to go.
For moose get a longer blade for the nasty bit.

@$260 you can get some very nice handmade blades. There are a ton of makers on here in the knife forum.
If you're looking for a specific hunting blade, it's really hard to beat Fallkniven or Bark River for good value.
A Falkniven F1 VG10 would fit in your range and is a solid choice.
A Bark River Knives Fox River would be a good choice too - lots of choices to affect price (scales, liners, pins, etc)

I’ve used a few different knives and the Morakniv is my favourite. Works good for skinning or quartering. It sharpens good and is tough as can be.
Best part is they are very reasonably priced (35$ I think).
