I need some help pricing this shotgun for sale.

It's a Simson Suhl 12/70 with ejectors, Improved Cylinder and Modified chokes. Almost never used.

Doesn’t have a model name but it says ‘Special – Gewerlaufstahl’ on the barrels.

Manufactured April 1982

Length of pull: 37cm
Barrel length: 66cm

No pitting in barrels, bluing is a bit worn on top near the end of the barrels (see pictures).

Help would be appreciated if anyone knows what this is worth!

Thanks. I have checked there, and there are some made in Suhl, but none by Simson Suhl unfortunately. Not sure how the values compare.

All coming out of the same commie run factory. After WWII gunmaking in Suhl (like everything else) was taken over by the government. They had the same factory turning out Sauers, Merkels and Simpsons. So among post war, East German shotguns from Suhl, Sauer and Merkel usually command a slightly higher price because many fewer people are aware of Simpson and most don't know they all come from the same factory. FYI there was also a West Germany Merkel operating at the same time. This is the wildly simplified version.

BTW and just for fun. Angela Merkel, leader of Germany is married to Joachim Sauer.

Lots of Simson double barrels on tradeex which were made in Suhl. But, post some close up pics of your gun on here so we have a better idea of just what you have.

Simson went bankrupt in 2002 . Not a lot of info on these, but usually valued along and compared with Merkel. Judging by you pics this is typical box lock , case hardened shot gun produced in Suhi at the time. Not any fancy engraving or furniture......however it has a Greener style crossbolt.
I would guess in mint condition about $1200 +, but yours is not mint .

I didn't see your link to the pics when I first read your post. Tradeex has similar condition guns listed at $495.00. That's about what you will get give or take depending on the buyer.

Thanks for the replies everyone, much appreciated. I hadn't thought to just search 'Simson', I was searching 'Simson Suhl', and nothing was coming up.

Simpson was a Jewish family of gunmakers that made some pretty extraordinary guns before the war....on par with the best of Sauer at the time. But Jews and Nazis weren’t a good mix and the outcome there was not far from what one might imagine. After the war it was just a brand name used by people who had confiscated its use. Whatever entity went bankrupt in 2002 it was simply the heir of Nazi, communist and socialist traditions (read theft) not the fine craftsmanship of the original Simpson family.

Are Angela Merkel and her Sauer husband part of the firearm families or just coincidence that they share the same last names? I’d be pretty shocked if that twot was from the same lineage.....

I don’t think Merkel is because she was born quite far away from Suhl. But her husband was born pretty close to Suhl so definitely a possibility. He’s some kind of research scientist.

450-500 range is fair. As said, they are identical to the other brands coming out of E.Germany at the time. Excellent, well made guns. I've had a few.

Neither Merkel nor Sauer have any family connection to the Merkel or Sauer firearms companies. However, it is interesting to note that German Chancellor Dr. Angela Merkel PHD (Kasner, married physicist Ulrich Merkel and took his surname. Divorced 1982) obtained a doctorate in quantum chemistry in 1986 and worked as a research scientist until 1989. Her current husband Dr. Joachim Sauer, PHD is a research scientist in quantum chemistry and computational chemistry.

My point was that, politics aside, they don't hand out doctorates in quantum chemistry and computational chemistry to just anyone. These are very smart people. Quite a contrast with our own current PM.

Except look at what that smart person's polices are doing to Germany.

Solid gun with useful chokes.
But I can’t see anyone giving more than $600, it would be on the EE for months.

Sad but true, even though that used Simpson is a much better gun than the new Turkish made doubles that are going for twice the price. If I wasn't a southpaw and that gun was on the EE for $500 I would send the seller an immediate "I'll take it!".

Guy's, I bought this gun from the OP 2 months ago. The gun is in far better condition than any Simson or Merkel that Tradeex has listed now at $800.00 and this is an ejector gun, not extractor like the ones on Tradeex. The gun performs flawlessly. Not a crack or hardly a mark in the stock. Great bores and tight action. The only flaw is the barrels have some bluing loss which I can remedy very easily if I decide too. Would I do it again---in a heartbeat! It would be a long time to find a gun of the same quality and condition for the price.
