Help with 223 loads for 700 sps varmint

My Savage Model 10 .308
$100 delivered. Haven't even bedded it yet but it's nice and comfortable.

$100 delivered?! Was that direct from Boyd's? I thought shipping was around $50 + duty and whatnot

I'll try that. What do you think of the American eagle brass? My bro loaded the 556 brass because he didn't like the AE brass. I bought 200 RP brass from Budget Shooter Supply that seems pretty nice so I'll be using that from now on anyway.

Other than having to fix up the primer pockets I like the federal (American Eagle) brass. I'm on loading #5 on one batch and just keep prepping more. I have around 700 pieces in circulation now with about 600 of those loaded with various bullets and powders to test (I have 3 223's).
Remington brass is nice, I cut it and convert it to 300 Blackout brass for one of my AR's and my non restricted ACR.

Hmmm, thinking about it some more maybe it was more than $100, As you see it in the picture straight from Boyd's. I would have to look for the invoice but maybe it was $99 for the stock and probably around $50 for shipping. I don't pay much attention to prices, if I did I wouldn't buy as much stuff as I do. This isn't a very good hobby to get into on a budget.

First thing to do is go out and buy 2 reloading manuals and read then cover to cover. Buy a Lyman reloading manual and the ABC's of Reloading. Many of your questions will be answered.

I bought the ABCs of reloading and I got a hand me down old hornady reloading manual. I can't shoot or reload right now so I'm reading up. It's a bit overwhelming but I'm going slowly and picking away trying to digest it all.

Amen to that! Lucky my family keeps me busy as well as poverty stricken so I don't notice it that much that I don't have shooting money ;)

I just wanted to post some data from my earlier shooting session. Also it appears that bullet length and rifle twist need to be matched more so than bullet weight. For some reason bullet length is not usually posted so I measured some of mine. I also measured some 6mm bullets that I plan on using with my .243 win rifle. I calculated ideal twist rates based on the green hill formula found in the ABC's or reloading. This doesn't seem entirely accurate as increased velocity seems to require a slower twist than what is recommended.

Length in inches /diameter in inches

150 / result

Total x diameter = twist rate

#note# this seemed to be for fairly low velocity rounds. At velocities over 3000 fps a lower twist is recommended. Which would explain why the 1 in 12 twist seems to work with rounds that compute with a recommendation of 1 in 10. I am by no means an expert and am open to correction or recommendations from others. I'm just trying to put some data out there that I struggled with finding.

22.7 gr. 5 shots 1.904" best 3 0.794"
23 gr 5 shots 1.504" best 3 .626"
23.5 gr. 5 shots 1.387" best 3 0.656"
23.7 gr 5 shots 1.586" best 3 0.281"

23.5 to 24.5 worked reasonably well. Over 24.5 shots became very erratic.
