I bought a POSP sciope for a Mosin Nagant, and ordered a side scope mount rail for it. When I took it to a gunsmith for installation, he/we were unable to figure out how to install it. If someone has info, I'd really appreciate. Here are pix of the scope and mount. Thanx to all who look.

Show these to him. If he can't figure this out, I suggest taking it elsewhere. Maybe Jason at Gunco, Nepean ON? (I see you're in Ottawa)

The scope does end up offset to the left quite a bit. I've been giving some thought to an M1D cheekrest for the rifle, to give you a cheek weld of some sort.

You want it straight up, not angled over to the right. It's not really easy to load the rifle as it is.

just looking at that i would say

That a machinist could mod that mount and put that scope much closer to directly over the bore. If it were me i would weld up those holes and redrill them for low head cap screws that would give you way more metal available to be cut so you could get it right over the bore or very close.

Do you mean milling off the right side of the mount so the scope moves over to the right more? I gues the limiting factor would be hitting the stock?

The 3 bolt pattern would remain the same would it not, thus no reason to move the holes in the receiver, just use shorter bolts?

In answer to your question

I would want to weld up the holes because as it is now the counter bores are too deep to allow all the metal possible to be removed. You would cut the bottoms off of the counterbores and the screws would have nothing to hold on to. Once i looked at pictures of the mount I decided that I was wrong and it is probably not possible to get the scope all the way over the bore. without the ability to actually measure the scope and mount I can't be sure. The hole locations would not have to move. In theory the stock would the limit but if you had to cut it it wouldn't be the end of the world. In fact not wanting to cut the stock is the reason this mount is not nearly as good as it should have been to begin with.

Admittedly the scope is too far over to the left. I've been thinking about getting an M1D leather cheekrest to try and get a cheekweld happening.

desporteriser, that is an excellant point

I hadn't thought of that. probably a way around that though, fiberglass or something like that. But looking at the pictures again that scope would have to come over one full scope diameter or more to be over the bore. there is not enough metal there. As it stands I do not think that a posp can be made to sit on the centerline of a nagant at least not without messing with the integral mount.

You probably could get it over far enough but then it would be so high you would only get a good sight picture with the butt resting on your nuts.

You obviously didn't see the vid of some dude shooting a shotgun with butt firmly resting on the family jewels. But kidding aside, I am being serious about the height of the scope. Imagine it attached to a svd rail bolted to a mosin on bore centerline & you will see what I mean.

I agree 100%

The only options are #1 live with it offset, or #2 buy a molot ultima mount and get the posp with the weaver attachments. Or #3 get a rock solid mount and attach the posp to that.

I just got a call that my toy is ready. I will pick it up Monday. I know the scope will not be centered over the bore, but hey, if it was good enough to vaporize tens of thousands of Nazis, it must be doing something right.

Any pics of the right-hand side ? :)

Got my toy back from Jason. He did a GREAT job! The scope is slightly offset to the left, but it's no issue. Will post pics ASAP. Hope to get out to try it on the weekend, if it warms up. I'm also making a wooden case for it, hoping to make it look like a military crate.
