Henry Homesteader

I'm about 1000 rounds in with mine and have had maybe one light strike where upon trying again it shot the second time. The gun was getting dirty at that point. Otherwise, a few times where the bolt didn't lock back on the last round, which I think only happened after trying a different kind of ammo. I wasn't keeping notes. So, overall a good experience with some variation based on ammo. Nothing unusual for a 9mm semi-auto carbine.

were you using glock mags or the henry ones?

Mine seem broken in now, about 1000 rounds each. They seem to be functioning fine, no light strikes anymore. A couple of fails to lock back but I'm using well worn glock mags so can't blame the guns.

I might have exaggerated when I said “horribly complicated”,
However a straight blow back pistol caliber, semi auto carbine gets filthy rather quickly and needs frequent cleaning.

The way the homesteader breaks down for cleaning is a royal pain in the a*s, and I would absolutely hate it.
Agree...after having the now banned FX9 - that sets the bar for ease of takedown and cleaning - 10-15 seconds to get everything out including disassembling bolt to firing pin.

Ruger PC Carbine was annoying, especially when tools are needed and they recommend the insane 65 inch pounds of torque (says in the manual). I stripped those bolts in even using a FAT wrench - and the shock buffer c-clip was annoying.

I did watch some videos of the takedown of the Homesteader. Compared to the FX9, it's more involved.

I considered the Homesteader after the Dec bans since every single one of my PCCs was banned. But I just can't get past the two Honest Outlaw review videos of the Homesteader both of which he had problems - maybe he just got a lemon, but I'd almost take my chance and get the local SAI R9.

Then again, a Homesteader may be a no-lose proposition, with Henry's lifetime warranty backing everything (I have used Henry's warranty on other Henry guns I owned, and they truly do back their product, though parts from the US take forever to clear CBSA)

I watched them and felt the same, but took the plunge anyway. I'm really glad I did. I have around 500 rounds through it now without a hitch - no issues whatsoever. It's very accurate and well built, imo. The sights are okay, but I think a skinner peep site, or a red dot, would be an improvement.

I use a red dot on mine. I don't like the factory rear sight but it works. It's a bit fragile looking with lots of screws. It's different from the simpler looking sight, with a thick base, that you'll see in most pictures online. The black ring on black front sight doesn't give me a good sight picture on standard black circle pistol targets that I normally use.

Anyway, I think a red dot is perfect for this rifle. I'm using a Ranger Point Precision rail.

Waiting on mine to arrive. Saw someone shooting one with a red dot, wondered what the best option would be. This is my 3rd firearm, I have a .357 big boy and a supernova tactical. This will be my first red dot sight, I have had my PAL 2 months. Thanks for any input.

Pretty much any red dot will do, one that doesn't have a built-in riser like you need for an AR type rifle. I.e., for most people you don't want to have the dot high above the irons because of the shape of the stock, which is like a traditional rifle. Many dots come with an optional riser and that's ok, you can just use the low mount. Some mounts are fixed at a high mount and I dont recommend those for the Homesteader.

Pistol dots would work fine. I'd recommend a 3 moa pistol dot as opposed to 6 moa or higher, unless your focus is on fast shooting. For a carbine, I think it makes sense to have a bit more precision from a dot 3 moa or smaller

My preference is a 2 moa dot for a rifle, to get a bit more precision. I've tested the difference and it's easier for me to get smaller groups at 25 yards from a rest with 2 moa vs 3 moa. That's just my preference. I think a lot of people use a 3 moa dot and it's fine for them.

I'm using a Primary Arms SLx Advanced Push Button Micro Red Dot Sight, Gen II. I like how that dot doesn't have big knob on the right side. I tried another dot that has a big knob on the right side and found it got in the way a bit when racking the charging handle on the right side. If you prefer the charging handle on the left, this is not an issue.

Henry Big Boy and Benelli Supernova as your first two guns...very nice! At this rate, you will have a very nice collection in no time!

i have a holosun on mine i like the larger ring then the dot, but you can select just the dot to if you like. i like the shake awake, and the lil solar panel which also auto adjusts the retical brightness

Anyone attempt to remove the recoil spring and guiderod from one of these yet?

Also PSA, if you need a rail for these, Amazon has them for $13 lol. Can still use the irons with the base, I have a Spark 2 on top with no rise so mounted very low, can still see the irons through the channel in the base.
Screws needed a little grind to shorten them, but not much. Pretty good rail for $13 lol.

With the rail and the Spark 2, is the Spark 2 low enough that you don't need to add a cheek riser to the stock to see through the Spark 2 ??

I was thinking of picking one up now that we have a non-restricted option here. I read the reviews of the shorter barrel US version and they aren't flattering. I hate guns that jam more than anything. Anyone get one here and throw some rounds through it? How does it work if so?
Good thing I found this thread. Was close to buying one
