Runningfool, who is this Jaylegger you speak of ?
Rob

Jaylegger suggested a motion activated sprinkler a few posts before Kevin M. did so I figured either you missed that or you have Jaylegger blocked and therefore cannot see his posts. Looks like it’s the latter.

Blue Herons are quite territorial, just buy a heron decoy and set it up prominently next to the pond.

We've tried eagle kites, floating alligators, flight path cables, reflectors, drones with a sawed off SxS 410... Ok not the last one. Only 1 thing worked, and it's not on the list.

WTF dude, grow up. Are you a child? We had a minor disagreement 6 months ago, get over it.

Interesting on the flight path cables.
A dump (transfer station) down Seattle way had an issue with Sea-Gulls and they used a flight path cable interrupter and it worked on them birds.
Maybe some hvy fishing line and a grid about three feet off the ground and 3 foot squares might do the trick or sss.

I'll correct my statement by saying you need a permit for getting rid of geese, but can eat them afterwards

Not according the MNR or CWS when they give out the permits.

Directly from the CWS problem goose section where they talk about which measures require permits to deter geese...

Yes, the killed geese can be consumed by the permit holder. The geese cannot be donated to another person

Sound, visual, or using dogs (cannot touch birds) to deter waterfowl seems fine without permits where as shooting or using raptors requires a permit.

Personally, I'm more of a "they were here first, enjoy the sight" type rather than the "kill every animal which causes me an inconvenience" type so I would just stock the pond with feeder fish and observe it hunt.

If you put food outside, wild animals will discover it sooner or later. Why kill a bird when it's simply eating the food it thinks you put out for it?

Interesting, I wonder why they'd give people conflicting information. Ultimately, that detail isn't really relevant to my initial post on the subject.

I tend to agree with the idea of letting nature run its course with minimal interference, although we've already interfered by changing the migratory habits of geese; they certainly weren't wintering in most areas of Canada before the smorgasbord of crop fields was presented to them by large-scale agriculture. So "they were here first" isn't entirely accurate through much of the year.

But enough side-tracks about geese and CWS and permits and such! This may be CGN's very first Heron Defense Thread; let's give it the respect it deserves! :)

You could always use a paintball gun. They pop up used for $50. If you need more firepower or don't want to wait for the rain to clean up any missed shots you can use "Reballs" which are paintball sized rubber balls. Non lethal and hurt like hell!

I keep one in my bedroom that goes full auto loaded with 250 shots instead of an actual firearm because the laws in our country are too messy for using a firearm to defend yourself.

Is that in case a hoard of Herons come for you in the night ?

I have never thought of the proper defense for that scenario.
