Ok.... Let's set aside that I have been labelled a liberal along with anyone that doesn't immediately resort to blasting the heron off the face of the Earth.....
I do appreciate OP's problem (even if I don't appreciate koi)..... I have an expensive purebred hunting hound.... He gets crated at night and a recent issue I ran into is an influx of rabbits in my neighborhood.... My dog is crated at night near a window, and if he happens to see one be goes nuts.... Regardless of time of day.... (Read: he wakes me up all hours of the night wanting to get at the rabbits)..... My simple solution had been to trap the rabbits and relocate them..... Problem solved....
Now, if OP wants a koi pond then all good.... There are lots of things he can do to protect his pond without resorting to illegally killing the heron..... Many have been suggested in this very thread...
